The highly publicized George Zimmerman Murder trial continued on Wednesday, as star witness Rachel “Dee Dee” Jeantel gave her testimony to the prosecution. In an intense and sometimes unsettling questioning round, Jeantel, who was on the phone with Trayvon moments before he was murdered, answered the questions the best she could.
Jeantel, 19, explained to George Zimmerman‘s defense attorney Don West that she had initially lied about her age (she claimed to be 16 at the time of questioning) to protect her privacy. She also revealed that she and Trayvon were not dating, but just close friends since grade school.
While being questioned, Jeantel described her last conversation with Trayvon, in which he notices a man looking at him.
“That a man just kept watching him,” she said.
The prosecutor continued, “Did you say anything back to him or did he say anything back to you?”
“Yes,” Jeantel replied. “I asked him how the man looked like. He just told me the man — the man looked creepy.”
“He said the man looked creepy?” the prosecutor asked.
“Creepy, white, kill-my-neighbors cracker,” Jeantel replied, and when asked to repeat her testimony a few times, added, “He looked like a creepy ass cracker.”
“He told me the man was looking at him,” she added, “so I had to think it might have been a rapist.”
The questioning continued on and Jeantel broke down when she explained why she didn’t attend Trayvon’s funeral.
I didn’t want to see the body. You’ve got to understand, you’re the last person to talk to the person and he died on the phone after you talked to him? You’ve got to understand what I’m trying to tell you. I’m the last person… You don’t know how I felt. You think I really want to go see the body after I just talked to him?
Jurors also heard from Jeannee Manalo, a resident at the Retreat at Twin Lakes, the gated community where Martin was killed. And Ramona Rumph, of the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office who told the jury Zimmerman made multiple calls to police in the months prior to the shooting, reporting young black males as “suspicious.”
Jeantel is expected to finish her testimony on Thursday (June 27). You can view her full testimony above.
