The state of Florida’s case against George Zimmerman began on Monday (June 24) and the highly publicized trial started off with many different emotions and even a knock knock joke. Yes you read that correctly, the lead defense attorney Don West started off with a poorly executed joke which got little to no response from the jury in Seminole circuit court.
“Knock, knock,” West said, stunning both the jury and the assembled onlookers.
“Who’s there?” he answered himself.
“George Zimmerman who?”
“Congratulations. You’re on the jury.”
“Nothing?” West said.
The court was deadly silent and even one the state’s attorneys shook his head in disbelief (video is below). West went on to apologize for the joke and he said, “I really thought it was funny,” he said. “Sorry if I offended anyone.”
A bloated and concerned looking Zimmerman sat looking on as state’s attorney John Guy got down to business and the seriousness of the case.
“‘F—ing punks,’” Guy stated right away, quoting Zimmerman in his call to a police dispatcher in the moments before his confrontation with Martin. “’These a–holes, they always get away.’ Those were words in that grown man’s mouth.”
Guy went on to declare that Zimmerman “followed and murdered an unarmed teenager.” He also promised the jury, “The truth is going to come directly from his month. Hateful words. Lies he told to police.” [ READ MORE ]
Looking on in the court were some of Trayvon Martin’s family members, including his mother Sybrina Fulton, his father Tracy Martin and grandmother Marion Evans. The family sat and cried as they listened to the description of Trayvon’s death on that February 2012 night.
The trial is expected to last up to 2 weeks or more and Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder.
