Kelly Rowland pays a visit to Philly’s Hot 107.9 and spills the deets on her new emotionally-driven track titled “Dirty Laundry.”
The coming-of-age songstress reveals that Destiny’s Child songs “Girl” and “Bad Habit,” were about her past abusive relationship. When her one-on-one turns a few corners, Rowland further discloses her celebrity crush and favorite emcee. Peep the excerpts below.
On whether or not “Girl” was written about her:
Yes. I love that song too, and it’s so funny because I don’t know how people connect dots with music and artists that they have followed for so long, but when I put that on Twitter people were starting to put all pieces to the puzzle together, it was so interesting. They did it with ‘Girl’, they did it with ‘Bad Habit’, they did it with so many songs on that album, and I was like, ‘Okay, that’s crazy.’
On getting emotional when she heard the lyrics to “Girl”:
Of course I did, the girls wrote it for me. Destiny’s Child is deeper than what people see on the surface. Those are my homies for life. ‘Golden Girls’, we stuck with each other… period.
On her celebrity crush:
He’s taken and I completely respect his wife… if he’s married. Jessie Williams from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. He’s just gorgeous, it makes no sense how beautiful this man is. I saw him at Super Bowl, and I refused to stare. It’s almost like you’re looking at a work of art. He’s such a man like in the way he talks, and the way he acts, it’s just really interesting.
On her favorite emcee:
Kendrick Lamar. I love how witty he is, and how he thinks of things off the cuff. He’s very socially conscious. He puts things that are happening, things that are current events… the way he thinks about stuff and puts it all together in a song, he’s just very smart, very intelligent… I like him a lot.
