Earlier this weekend, singer-songwriter Jill Scott took to her twitter to speak on the popular twerking craze. If you didn’t know, ‘twerking’ is defined as a “dance move that involves a person shaking their hips and bottom in a bouncy up and down motion, causing it to shake, ‘wobble’ and ‘jiggle.’
The dance became popular down south back in the early 90s, but has now gained international craze with the help of youtube and other social media platforms. Not to mention, many young celebs can be seen posting #TEAMTWERK photos on instagram.
Checkout the tweet that Jill posted, that had some women (especially African women) up in arms.
Twerking was invented when some woman of African descent ran out of toilet paper. There’s plenty now. Kmart, 7-eleven, target..good prices 2

Many of her followers took offense, check out some of her @ replies:
After a few response tweets like the ones above, Jill shared another tweet, in which she said it was just a joke..
Relax. It’s a joke. Visuals darling. Visuals. O K For the slow and sensitive- African women since b4 Venus Hottentot have been know 4 the sizable derrière. It was a visual JOKE. Chill
She also RT’d a few of her followers that understood that it was just a joke:
Some people still were upset about it but overall Jill took it with good stride, saying:
I’m still laughing. Off to work. Love the passion. Misguided, confused and ultra sensitive but good. The point- we’ve taken something private & made it über public. Pull up.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF JILL’S TWEET? DID IT OFFEND YOU OR WAS IT FUNNY?
