In a graphic video made with UK human rights group Reprieve, rapper/actor Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def), volunteered to have himself force-fed in the same manner as a procedure reportedly used on hunger-striking Guantanamo Bay detainees.
The video, which was released in observance of Ramadan (the Islamic holy month of fasting), is based on a leaked government document outlining the “Standard Operating Procedure” for the “medical management of detainees on hunger strike.”
A court order has been filed on the behalf of four of the Guantanamo detainees to halt the practice for the holiday and more than 100 hunger-strikers in Guantanamo Bay continue their protest. More than 40 of them are being force-fed and the full procedure is carried out twice a day and usually takes two hours to complete.
Many Islamic community leaders are urging the Obama administration to reevaluate this crude policy. Please check out the video above and let us know your thoughts in the comment area below.
