The 2013 BET Awards was a night full of music, laughs, drama, and special moments. In the realm of fashion, we were granted many hits, with an equal amount of misses. Let’s go down the list of the best and worst dressed, along with popular trends of the evening at this year’s ceremony.
Naya Rivera & Big Sean: The beaming couple looked cute as ever on the BET red carpet. Naya dazzled in an embellished Emilio Pucci cocktail dress and pointy black heels, and Sean complemented her look dressed in a white Lanvin top and black pants, pulled together with black Timberland boots.
Amber Rose & Wiz Khalifa: The model and rapper took a more casual take to the read carpet this year. Amber was dressed in a canary and black printed Versace skater dress, and Wiz wore all-black, tee, pants, and kicks.
Gabrielle Union & Dwyane Wade: The actress and Miami Heat champion player dressed in a classic, yet cool pairing. Gabby wore a scarlet Zac Posen cocktail dress with strappy black heels, and her beau Dwyane wore a silver blazer with his suit, making his look more casual with studded toe oxford shoes.
Paula Patton & Robin Thicke: The actress and “Blurred Lines” crooner took to the carpet in simple black and white. Paula wore a flowing white Max Azria gown with sheer panels and Robin opted for a clean cut black suit worn sans tie. We love these two, but they looked a little off, no?
Nazanin Mandi & Miguel: The model and her “How Many Drinks?” beau never fail to ooze sex appeal on the red carpet. Nazanin wore a snake print and black contrast Anthony Vaccarello dress with black strappy heels, and Miguel was clad in Dior Homme. We love the bird print shirt!
Ciara & Future: Hip Hop’s new hot couple decided to go for all black everything. Ciara donned a black leather bandeau top with spaghetti straps and matching pencil skirt, and Future was dressed in a Givenchy oxford shirt and leather pants. We like their look, but feel Cici looked a little naked.
LADIES IN WHITE
Janelle Monae: The always gorgeous Janelle Monae wore her signature suit ensemble, but this time, in an all-white Dolce & Gabbana number. We love the clean aesthetic and jeweled neckline.
Mya: Mya’s look is a bit good and bad. Her pantsuit outfit was a bit confusing as it looks like the pants were of a knit/ leggings-like material. However, her accessories and make-up made us overlook this mishap.
Lauren London: Where to begin? First off, Miss London is giving us “stank face” and her look is just a NO. The white pants are not flattering, and the sheer top over the black bra is just, boring.
Omarosa Manigault: It was nice to see Omarosa beaming on the red carpet, dressed in a white dual layer Jovani gown. Great for summer.
LeToya Luckett: Another look we are on the fence about is LeToya Luckett’s white SEN couture jumpsuit. The style fits her shape nicely, but something is off in the bodice area. Does it need a waistband? Different straps? You be the judge.
Kenya Moore: The reality-actress’s floor length, side-swept gown was gorgeous. She could have eased up on some of the bangles though.
FRENCH YOU NEED TO STOP…
French Montana decided to take down a tribe of anacondas with two outfits that were full of exotic snake elements. The usage of these skins was completely distasteful because the outfits were just plain ugly! I wonder what P.E.T.A. thinks about this one…
Bridget Kelly: One of the best looks of the evening went to BK in her Maria Lucia Hohan charteuse silk chiffon gown. Gorgeous.
Adrienne Bailon: Adrienne’s ruby colored, draped one-shoulder Michael Costello gown was beautiful, and did justice to her tiny frame.
Megan Good: Megan had the girls on display in her sapphire cleavage-bearing gown. The number flaunted Megan’s curves, but we believe the look would have been more tasteful if the neckline was raised about four inches.
Trinidad James: Mr. “All Gold Everything” upkept his gimmick, walking the carpet shirtless with a canary colored leather jacket with gold accents, paired with black leather pants, and color blocked shoes. No sir, just no!
Lala Anthony: Lala was a hit and miss in her magenta bodycon Lanvin cocktail dress. The silhouette was flattering to her figure, but there was a bit too much padding in the shoulder area. Very Star Trek.
Terrence J: The actor and current E! News anchor looked dapper in Versace, specifically his scarlet tuxedo jacket with black satin lapels.
FIRE YOUR STYLIST
When it comes to awards show fashions, the biggest faux pas one can make is to wear the same outfit as another attendee. The 2013 BET Awards best exemplified this, three times over, and the star of the evening was a black with gold-chain detail Versace sweater.
Rapper J. Cole, actor Brandon T. Jackson, and DJ Drama all wore the same sweater, and their outfits, were the same for the most part. All three men paired the Versace sweater with black pants, Brandon choosing slacks over jeans to dress it up a bit, and black shoes. To bring out the gold detail of the sweater, all three men wore a gold chain, of varying weight. Both Cole and Drama topped off the look with dark shades, but Drama added one more accessory; a fitted hat.
With all this said, the question is, who GQ’ed it?
TEXTURED & EMBROIDERED LOOKS
Sanaa Lathan: Sanaa took the carpet in a beautiful champagne-colored strapless mini bandage dress that appears to be Hervé Leger.
Brandy: The actress and singer looked beautiful in an embroidered, peplum-style
Balmain Michael Cinco cocktail dress. The shoes, however, were overkill.
Tatyana Ali: Miss Ali looked beautiful in a textured, geometric print gown with plunging neckline. The make-up and hair was fab to boot!
Ashanti: The singer and actress looked cute in a hand-beaded long-sleeve Aiisha cocktail dress. She complemented the look with nude sandals, but the bun was a bit distracting, no?
Bobby V.: The R&B singer did too much with his look. The bronze paisley embroidered jacket had entirely too many black velvet buttons, not suitable for someone his stature. In addition, the jacket paired with a tee, leather pants, and sneakers was confusing to say the least. We won’t even comment on his hair.
Angela Simmons: Let us give Miss Simmons the award for worst-dressed female at the BET Awards. The dress was doing everything that it shouldn’t have done; ruffles, a collar, embroidery, lingerie elements…the answer is NO. Today, tomorrow, and forever. Also, the hair was choppy and the make-up was not that flattering.
Michael B. Jordan: The Fruitvale Station star looked nice in a mini check navy suit, with a black contrasting shirt, and blue tie.
Jay Ellis: BET’s The Game star was the epitome of summer-cool in an almost all white look, paired with chinos and a cognac colored leather belt.
Boris Kodjoe: The handsome Kodjoe wore a look from his new line of affordable , custom-tailored suiting called Alfa, paired with a pair of black sneakers.
Pharrell Williams: The always fashionable Pharrell donned his favorite, Lanvin for the evening. We like that he’s been consistent with the bow-tie look.
Justin Timberlake: JT looked handsome in all black, wearing a textured Tom Ford suit, and Christian Louboutin oxfords.
Jamie Foxx: The super-talented actor and musician took a color risk, donning an all maroon Ozwald Boateng suit, but it was worth it! The look was impeccable on Foxx, down to the shoes.
