“I’m honored to present the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage to the most beautiful, strong woman, I’ve ever been around,” said Lebron James as he presented the award to recipient, Robin Roberts at the 2013 ESPY Awards show.
The Arthur Ashe Courage Award is for recipients who “reflect the spirit of Arthur Ashe, possessing strength in the face of adversity, courage in the face of peril and the willingness to stand up for their beliefs no matter what the cost.”
Roberts, who’s most certainly qualified being one of the most prolific sports journalist there is, was also grateful to be the latest honoree. The Good Morning America anchor, once a star athlete growing up before her career in broadcast journalism, received a standing ovation upon her accepting the award.
I realize there’s many worthy of holding this honor. Others that have exhibited far more courage, strength and resilience. And it’s humbling for me to represent you tonight. I draw strength from you. You give me the courage to face down any challenge.
In 1990, Roberts joined ESPN on Sportscenter as a sports anchor and reporter for a span of fifteen years. She later joined ABC’s GMA as a reporter where she later became a host for the show. Roberts, 52, joins the likes of Pat Tillman, Muhammad Ali, and Billie Jean King who have been honored with the award in the past.
