Lupe Fiasco made a splash over the weekend when he served as the keynote speaker for the “2013 Mass Black Male Graduation and Transition to Manhood” ceremony. In his native hometown of Chicago, the “B*tch Bad” emcee did away with the usually over-sentimental congratulations and delivered, instead, a rather brusque oration.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Lupe spewed criticism all over Chicago public schools:
Congratulations, you have graduated from one of the most terrible, substandard school systems in the entire world. You have just spent the last 12 years receiving one of the worst educations on earth. You are at least four, five steps behind people in other countries that are younger than you.
True to form, Lupe said out loud what most would never utter. The rapper/producer wasn’t entirely melancholy, however. He equally inspired within the graduates the importance of understanding and respecting their manhood:
For young black men, it is one [of] the last things that we have and one of the last things that we can control. Manhood is connected to humanity.
The notoriously vocal lyricist concluded his speech by gifting each graduate with $100.
