It’s been a crazy time, in a good way, for Luke James. Fresh off opening for Beyonce on both the European and U.S. legs of the Mrs. Carter Show World Tour, we here at Concrete Loop were fortunate to catch up him in the midst of the whirlwind for an exclusive interview.
Signed to Danja’s NARS Records imprint through Island Def Jam, Luke has been making a name for himself via his mixtapes #LUKE and Whispers In The Dark, and is currently prepping for the fall release of his first LP entitled Made To Love. He also makes his feature film debut this coming holiday season in Black Nativity, starring alongside Forrest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Mary J. Blige, Nas, and many others.
We chatted with Luke about touring, what we can expect from his new album, his take on the current state of R&B music, and more.
On the difference between fans overseas and in the U.S.:
Overseas is a bit more receptive. They’re very open as long as you came to do what you say you can do, they’re all about it. Over here, we’re a little bit harsh. You gotta damn near set yourself on fire to impress us [American fans].
On his experience being a part of the Black Nativity cast:
That was awesome. It was awesome opportunity to be a part of that. I’m totally blessed, especially for it to be my first feature film.
