After modeling the life of South African hero, Nelson Mandela, in Long Walk To Freedom, Idris Elba is headed back to Africa to star in Cary Fukunaga’s movie adaptation of Nigerian author, Uzodinma Iweala’s bestselling book, Beasts of No Nation.
The novel, which chronicles the travels of a young boy who is forced to join a group of soldiers in an unidentified West African country, is being converted to film by Red Crown Productions.
Elba –– who will also produce –– is of course not playing the youth, but the Commander of the troops for which the boy fights.
This project has been seven years in the making, so to say I’m excited to start shooting this — and with Idris Elba as lead — would be me trying to play it cool. Red Crown has real moxie standing behind this story.
Film financing conglomerate, IM Global, is moving the project over to the Toronto International Film Festival for international sales.
Stay tuned. Till then, pick up the book first, if you haven’t already.
