It’s not often that a husband and wife get sentenced to prison together, and for “misusing” campaign funds, but someone had to do it, right? In this case, it was Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife Sandi Jackson who got “down and dirty.”
The former U.S. representative was sentenced today to 30 months behind bars, while his wife got 365 days in prison for separate felonies involving the misspending of some $750,000 in campaign funds. After the hearing, Jackson acknowledged his failings, having stated:
I still, believe in the power of forgiveness. I believe in the power of redemption. Today I manned up and tried to accept responsibility for the error of my ways. And I still believe in the resurrection.
As implored by the family, according to the Chicago Tribune, the spouses will be serving their sentences one at a time.
Sandi Jackson cried through her courtroom statement, regretting to have put her family in peril, saying:
I stand before you today asking for mercy. My heart breaks every day with the pain it’s caused my babies. I ask the court for mercy.
As specified by the judge, Jackson Jr. is slated to report to prison on or after Nov. 1, while Mrs. Jackson may serve her term in a federal correctional institution in Marianna, Florida should she so choose to. The facility, for minimum-security female offenders, is a prison camp about 65 miles outside of Tallahassee.
