With only a handful of hours to spare before the day was over, an emcee from New York finally responded to Kendrick Lamar’s unabashed “Control” verse, in which he, amongst other things, claimed to be the “King of New York.” Brooklyn’s very own, Joell Ortiz, jumped into the studio and concocted a lyrical snack, pouring out three minutes of straight bars over the No I.D. production.
“I ain’t even gotta give this too much thought/Joell Ortiz won every war that he ever fought/This ain’t no different, I’m listening, you the king of New York?/ Lil homie you ain’t the king of New York, you the next thing on my fork.”
After Ortiz kicked down the door, other rappers stepped up to the plate and formulated their own rebuttals. King Los rustled up his own version of “Control” and Fred the Godson laid down his two cents in “Say My Name.” And most recently, after pulling teeth, even Lupe Fiasco tested his own lyrical flame in “SLR 2″ cooing at Kendrick in a child-like voice, telling him he isn’t Nas nor Jay Z.
