When Brandy caught wind of the opportunity to honor Nelson Mandela, she hopped on it!
The singer/actress attempted to surprise concert goers this past weekend in Johannesburg, South Africa after being added to the line-up at the last minute.
Unfortunately — much to Brandy’s surprise — the 90,000 seater First National Bank Stadium had already cleared out by the time she came out.
According to one attendee (@Kabomo), Brandy performed a pair of songs (before an estimated crowd of 40 audience members) before becoming furious and storming off stage:
Brandy performed to an empty stadium. With the stadium lights on. She sulked after two songs and walked off.[...] It was late. People didn’t know there was a concert after the games. No one knew Brandy was around. Maybe a 40 people audience
Brandy’s rep has also issued a statement regarding the incident, saying:
She was booked at the last minute to fly to South Africa to support a “cause”–not a concert. It was a cause that honored “Mr. Nelson Mandela” and there was other performers on the bill besides Brandy. This whole story has been blown out of proportion.
Nelson Mandela Sports & Cultural Day concert was held following a festive day of sports activities and more. We’re sure next time Brandy’s scheduled to perform somewhere, her people will be sure to make sure it’s known.
