Even though Oprah Winfrey is one of the richest women in the world, it doesn’t mean she still doesn’t get discriminated against.
The media mogul recently opened up about another international shopping trip that turned sour; presumably because she was black.
Winfrey, who made a reported $77 million last year, told Entertainment Tonight:
I was in Zurich for Tina Turner’s wedding. And I go into a store and I say to the woman… “Excuse me, may I see that bag above your head?” And she says to me, “No, it’s too expensive.” And I say, “No, no, no. You see the black one. That’s folded over..” And she said, “No, no, no. You don’t want to see that one. You want to see this one because that one will cost too much money and you will not be able to afford that.”…
She refused to get it and she started to show me these other little bags and I tried one more time. And she said, “I don’t want to hurt your feelings..” And I said, “Thank you so much, you’re probably right.. I can’t afford it..” and I walked out of the store.
Oprah went on to say that she could have blown up and thrown down her black card, but decided not to. Plus, the lady would have gotten a commission..Ha!
Store owner Trudie Gotz says the whole thing is a misunderstanding and the salesperson probably didn’t clearly understand what Oprah was asking for. Gotz (who said she didn’t take care of Oprah personally) told told BBC NEWS:
My salesperson wanted to give her the handbag in her hand. But she didn’t want to take the bag.
I didn’t take care of [Winfrey]. I’m sure she felt like this – but my salesgirl promised me she took care of [her] really the best she could. So it must have been a misunderstanding..
She tried to show Mrs Oprah the same style in other qualities, because maybe she didn’t understand what she wanted.
Sounds like bull to me! They knew what she was asking for. Gotz went on to say that the salesperson’s English isn’t that good and that she has worked for her store for a few years now with no incident.
Either way, the country of Switzerland and their national tourism board wants no part of the incident and has issued an apology to Ms. Winfrey – saying, “We are very sorry for what happened to her.”
That $35,000 bag is probably collecting dust now…Oh well!
