As part of his his CRWN interview series, Rap Radar’s Elliott Wilson sat down with man of the moment, Drake, for a candid interview. Held on Sunday, September 22nd at the Skirball Center on NYU’s campus in front of a live audience, Concrete Loop was in the building to see the conversation unfold between the two. In episode one of the approximately two-hour interview, Drake talks about his process recording his new album, Nothing Was the Same, and his contemporaries in hip hop.
On controversy in media:
If I go to the radio station and don’t say some dumb sh*t about Chris Brown, or I don’t do some wild sh*t, they get no ratings. So it’s really hard to participate in media otherwise.
On Kendrick’s “Control” verse:
He is the underdog that’s extremely hungry, and he’s doing his thing really well. And that verse…he’s giving people moments. That verse was a moment to talk about. Are you listening to it now at this point in time?
On Kanye being a personal inspiration:
There’s one guy who is up every night thinking about how to get better, and how to do things bigger, and that’s Kanye West. He’s always going to be the guy who is trying to outthink and outdo everybody, so for me, that would be my guy to aspire to surpass.
Press play up top to get into the interview. Drake’s third studio album, Nothing Was the Same, is in stores now.
