Early Monday morning (September 16), gunman Aaron Alexis went on a shooting rampage at a Washington D.C. Navy Yard building.
The military contractor and former naval reservist from Texas, reportedly opened fired in a busy cafeteria to an unsuspecting crowd.
12 people are reported dead and another dozen are reported to be injured.
The 34 year-old shooter is among the deceased, killed in the shootout with the authorities who stormed the building.
The senseless shooting put Washington D.C. at a stand still, where the Capitol was closed, schools were locked down, highways shut down and air traffic was suspended.
President Obama spoke briefly about the incident while at the White House, saying of the victims:
They’re Patriots. And they know the dangers of serving abroad but today they faced the unimaginable violence that they wouldn’t have expected here at home.
