Let’s face it, Rihanna does what she wants! So when I strolled down my timeline of Instagram updates and saw Rihanna in Thailand pictured with a monkey on her shoulder, I was the least bit shocked.
Her caption “Look who was talking dirty to me!” doesn’t come by surprise either. What threw me for a loop was that this monkey business would become the center of national news — who knew?!
What Rihanna may or may not have known was that the cute little furry animal, a Slow loris which is a protected primate, would cause more damage than anyone taking a selfie could imagine. The Instagram post that generated over 200,000 likes and god knows how many views eventually led to the arrest of two individuals.
Thai officials were made aware of the the photo up top and arrested a 16-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man who could be facing charges of possession of protected animals with a penalty of up to four years in prison and a $1,300 (40,000 baht) fine.
According to AP, authorities have tried to crack down the problem of vendors exploiting wildlife for years. “It’s like a cat-and-mouse game,” one authority said. “But this time it’s bigger because a celebrity like Rihanna posted the picture, and there were more than 200,000 ‘likes’ from around the world.” As for Rihanna, I’m sure she’ll carry on and do what she does best– any and everything she wants, DUH.
