Sunday Night Football wasn’t the only thing causing viewers to jump out of their seats. An Indian-American Miss New York, being crowned as the new Miss America, generated just as big a ruckus.
In the wake of winning the 2014 Miss America title, Nina Davuluri, who is the first winner of Indian descent, endured a bigoted reaction from the public on Sunday night. Viewers unabashedly tweeted their backlash following the crowning.
Amongst the aforementioned tweets were other racist comments like “So miss america is a terrorist” and “9/11 was 4 days ago and she gets miss America?”
In response, the 24-year-old beaut from Fayetteville, New York, took up a portion of her first press conference to acknowledge the hatred that ensued shortly after the pageant.
I have to rise above that. I always viewed myself as first and foremost American… I’m so happy this organization has embraced diversity. I’m thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.
