After recently inking a major label deal with Interscope Records, Mateo is definitely in good spirits.
The singer/songwriter stopped by the studios to chat about his upcoming debut effort, as well as working with veteran producer Kerry “Krucual” Brothers on the pending release.
He also opened up about growing up in a musical family, his musical inspirations and a whole lot more. Check out some snippets below:
MATEO ON GROWING UP IN A MUSICAL FAMILY:
I grew up in a musical family so we were always performing. I was forced to perform at every Thanksgiving or Christmas against my will. I hated it but it was apart of life. My grandfather was a jazz blues guitarist – he played for James Brown and my grandmother is a touring singer.
ON HIS UPCOMING ALBUM:
I come from a background where r&b and soul is the root of everything. But I’m a big Coldplay fan, so you gonna hear some rock stuff in there. You might hear some electronic stuff in there. So we just kinda mixed it up. All the stuff that I loved.
ADVICE FOR UP & COMING ARTISTS:
You gotta be persistent about what you’re doing and disciplined. You gotta work hard at it every day…. If you don’t live in NY or L.A. you’re not just gonna run into [industry] people on the street. You gotta put your stuff out there to build a base up.
