For their February 2014 issue, ESSENCE magazine hopped on a chance to feature comedian turned daytime television host Steve Harvey and his wife, Marjorie.
The happily married couple chatted it up with the New York City-based publication about everything from marriage, how it felt like love at first sight when they met to how she stood by his side despite his hushed $20 million lien:
‘No one has ever even heard this story,’ he says quietly. His confidants at the time all advised him not to tell Marjorie. ‘She’ll leave you,’ they said. ‘This is the happiest we’ve ever seen you,’ they had told him after he married Marjorie, ‘but nobody is going to stick around with this kind of mess.’ Of course, Steve told her. ‘I said, ‘If this woman leaves me over this, I will be the most surprised man on planet Earth.’ ‘Marjorie stayed…’
And because of her unconditional love for her husband, Steve accredits who he is today to the woman of his life:
The Lord saved my soul. Marjorie saved my life. You’ve got to be in a bad relationship to really understand what a great one is. Marjorie changed the way I existed. I’d never been in a healthy adult relationship. I’d never been loyal, I’d never been fully respected [...] Every great man has a woman… I didn’t say successful man, I said great man. Yeah, maybe you’re successful if you sign a $16 million NBA contract. But greatness is when you’re the husband and father you’re supposed to be. When everyone surrounding you looks up to you, depends on you, and you come through for them. That’s greatness.
Let’s give it on up for love & greatness!
