I mean how can you not appreciate Spike Lee‘s bluntness?
Earlier this week, the veteran filmmaker made headlines after speaking passionately about gentrification in New York City.
While speaking at the Pratt Institute, he was asked whether he could look at the concept of gentrification from another point of view or from a more positive frame of mind, Lee immediate cut him off and started off by saying, “Alright, let me just kill you right now.”
He went on to point out the relationship between safety and a higher Caucasian count in urban communities, voicing his disapproval of “hipsters” taking over historical areas of the city:
Then comes the motherfuckin’ Christopher Columbus Syndrome. You can’t discover this! We been here. You just can’t come and bogart. You can’t just come in the neighborhood and start bogarting and say, like you’re motherfuckin’ Columbus and kill off the Native Americans. Or what they do in Brazil, what they did to the indigenous people. You have to come with respect. There’s a code. There’s people. I’m for democracy and letting everybody live but you gotta have some respect. You can’t just come in when people have a culture that’s been laid down for generations and you come in and now shit gotta change because you’re here?
After a mouthful of uncensored opinions, the CNN’s Anderson Cooper decided to invite the 56 year-old director to talk about his expletive rant, explain the term “bogart” and what he really meant in his rant:
I don’t hate anybody. I think anybody’s entitled to live wherever they want. My problem is that when you move into a neighborhood, have some respect for the history, for the culture. And I’m going to explain the word “bogart” for people that don’t know. “Bogart” comes from Humphrey Bogart, meaning you come in and you’re just taking over. You can’t do that. Harlem’s a historic black neighborhood. History. [...]Just come and be humble. Don’t come here and say, ‘This is the way it has to be.’
