After serving three months on tax evasion charges, Ms. Lauryn Hill has been reportedly released from prison. Just last night (October 3), the 38 year-old also decided to release a new track, “Consumerism.”
Similar to her “Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)” track, this new song is kind of sporadic and sounds like spoken word over various instrumentals. Take a listen below.
Along with the track, Lauryn also updated her tumblr page with the following message:
Consumerism is part of some material I was trying to finish before I had to come in. We did our best to eek out a mix via verbal and emailed direction, thanks to the crew of surrogate ears on the other side. Letters From Exile is material written from a certain space, in a certain place.

In the cover article of the November 2013 issue of Vanity Fair, rapper turned mogul Jay Z opened up about his past as a drug dealer on the streets of NYC and what it taught him about business, saying:
I know about budgets. I was a drug dealer. To be in a drug deal, you need to know what you can spend, what you need to re-up. Or if you want to start some sort of barbershop or car wash—those were the businesses back then. Things you can get in easily to get out of [that] life. At some point, you have to have an exit strategy, because your window is very small; you’re going to get locked up or you’re going to die.
That quote has a lot of people weighing in, saying that the mogul was glorifying the drug game and making it look like an option to some of his younger fans. Noted music producer and recording artist Swizz Beatz gave his 2 cents during his sit down with Katie Couric this week.
I know Jay Z personally and I know that he’s a great guy. He’s the furthest thing from trouble in the industry and in the streets now a days.
