Monday, September 14, 2009 |

After randomly popping up on stage during Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ closing performance at last night’s VMAs, Lil Mama has issued an apology to them both:

“I did not mean any disrespect towards Jay-Z or Alicia Keys. I admire them and look up to them as role models. ‘Empire State of Mind’ had my emotions running high. In that moment I came up onstage to celebrate my two icons singing about NY.”

We still think she had a sip from Kanye’s Hennessy. Speaking of Mr. West, he has issued another apology to Taylor Swift via his blog:

‘ROUND THE WAY: SERENA WILLIAMS LOSES U.S. OPEN ON PENALTY

Sunday, September 13, 2009 |

Check out Serena Williams at a press conference following her loss to Belgium’s Kim Clijsters in the U.S. Open on Saturday.

After Clijsters won the first set, Williams slammed her racket to the court twice, earning a warning for racket abuse. A lineswoman then called Williams for a foot fault on her second serve, which Williams then reportedly approached her and told her that “you don’t know me,” and that she would “shove this ball down your throat”. Having already picked up her first code violation, she had no points left to give.

CL HISTORY SPOTLIGHT: THE TUSKEGEE SYPHILIS EXPERIMENT

Thursday, September 10, 2009 |

( A doctor administers a blood test to an unidentified subject )

The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment began in 1932, when the Public Health Service started working with the Tuskegee Institute to study the effects of syphilis on the human body. However, the nearly 400 poor black men who participated in the study were never informed they even had syphilis nor were they treated for it.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the men were told they were being treated for “bad blood”, a local term used to describe several illnesses, including syphilis, anemia and fatigue. In exchange for their participation, the men were given free medical exams, free meals and free burial insurance. Although originally projected to last 6 months, the study went on for 40 years.

Dr. Taliaferro Clark is credited with the origin of the study after he suggested the racial variation in the effects of syphilis so that Southern legislators would increase funding for treatment programs. Clark believed Macon County would be the perfect location for the study as it had one of the highest rates of syphilis in the nation.

POLITICS: PRESIDENT OBAMA’S HEALTH CARE SPEECH TO CONGRESS + VIDEO

Thursday, September 10, 2009 |

President Barack Obama urged Congress to enact sweeping health care legislation on Wednesday night, declaring:

“the time for bickering is over. The time for games has passed. Now is the season for action. Now is when we must bring the best ideas of both parties together, and show the American people that we can still do what we were sent here to do. Now is the time to deliver on health care.”

During his speech, Republicans laughed when the President acknowledged that significant details still need to be worked out. Not to mention, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor was seen text messaging. In addition, South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson yelled, “You lie!” (he later issued an apology) when the President said legislation would not include insurance coverage for illegal immigrants. The President paused briefly following the outburst, while First Lady Michelle Obama shook her head from the visitor’s gallery.

Check out more photos and video of the speech below.

‘ROUND THE WAY: FORMER BET EMPLOYEE SPEAKS OUT

Wednesday, September 9, 2009 |

We all have our opinions regarding BET (I certainly do), but one former employee of the company is shedding light on the criticisms and even justifies them.

Andreas Hale was let go as Executive Editor of Music at BET.com on Tuesday and sent an email “to friends, colleagues and those that should know” that quickly spread around the ‘net. In it, Hale explained that when he accepted the position, he needed “365 days to sleep with the enemy and infiltrate the system. One year to see if they REALLY wanted change at BET.”

Hale states that he had always been critical of BET, “but it was an opportunity I absolutely had to take.” He adds that although he was hired to bring about change, he “was systematically shut down. I wasn’t hired to make noise, I was hired to be silenced.”

NEWS: HOWARD UNIVERSITY STUDENT PROTEST

Saturday, September 5, 2009 |

On Friday, over 300 Howard University students crowded the administration building, protesting problems with on-campus housing, delays in financial aid payments and other administration policies. The group also threatened a sit-in before they were turned away from the doors.

Students say they received a text message Thursday night telling them to wear all black and join the protest. Kristopher Owens, a junior advertising major who organized the protest, said it all started when he attempted to have information processed in the administration building earlier this year. He was told that he would have to make an appointment and wouldn’t be able to get one until September 9, although classes started over a week ago. Sitting in class one day, he decided “enough is enough”.
