NEWS: JAMES CRAIG ANDERSON’S KILLER, DERYL DEDMON, SENTENCED TO LIFE

In August, we mentioned the despicable killing of 49-year-old James Craig Anderson, a black man, who was beaten and run over by Deryl Dedmon, Jr., a white 18-year-old, and his group of friends who wanted to “go fuck with some niggers”.

On Wed., March 21, Dedmon pleaded guilty to murder and a hate-crime charge before Judge Jeff Weill sentenced him to two concurrent life terms, saying, “This craven act isn’t who we are.” Dedmon could have faced the death penalty, but the Anderson family urged prosecutors not to pursue capital punishment as they oppose it and hope to promote racial reconciliation in the city.

Dedmon and his friends, John A. Rice, 18, and Dylan Butler, 20, were charged with one count each of conspiracy and one of violating Mr. Anderson’s civil rights on Thursday. They face up to five years for the conspiracy charge and up to life for the hate-crime violations.
