Meet Chaz. Some of you may be familiar with this singer/actor from his various movie and television roles from throughout the years; including, ‘The Game’, cult classic ‘The Temptations’, ‘7th Heaven’ and more.
He recently wrapped up a stellar Broadway-starring role as Harpo opposite Fantasia in Oprah Winfrey’s “The Color Purple,” and is now ready to showcase his talents on his debut album, “The First One.”
The lead single is “By My Side” and the singer recently opening up on his writing style and technique. Chaz describes himself as a “feel” writer and singer. “I write based on the feeling and energy of the moment,” he explains. “If that’s not there, then my creativity will be forced and I can’t live with that. The melody and lyrics have to be married to each other. It’s hard to produce a song I feel doesn’t make sense.”
Take a listen to his song “By My Side” and view the video when you keep reading.
Michelle Williams, former bandmate of Destiny’s Child has pushed back her album from an August 12th release to October 7th. Despite “We Break the Dawn” hitting #1 on Billboard’s dance charts, I think the album has been pushed back due to a lack of promotion. There was a dispute where BET wasn’t giving Michelle’s video any airplay.
The plan is to send out “The Greatest” as Michelle’s official second single, as well as churning out “Hello Heartbreak” for dance radio. The general response to Michelle’s material has been positive overall, so hopefully this new strategy for the album release works out. I definitely don’t want Michelle to suffer from what Kelly endured during the U.S. release of her sophomore effort, Ms. Kelly.
In the mean time, Solange and Michelle were both due out to release albums two weeks apart, so you can still pick up SoL-Angel & the Hadley Street Dreams (check out the official album cover here) on the 26th of August.
JAZMINE SULLIVAN LIVE
This isn’t really news, but the internet has been going nuts (not to mention my inbox) over this new live performance from Jazmine Sullivan. “In Love With Another Man” is the song that had J. Records executives on their feet when she performed it live for them, and apparently, it sealed the deal for the 21-year-old songstress. Well, here she is performing in the Seventeen Magazine offices, with just her pipes and the piano.
Remember that Artist Spotlight we did on her last year…
Look out for her debut album, Fearless, in stores soon. This girl is singin’, ya’ll…
♫ Pussycat Dolls feat. Darkchild, Diddy, Lil’ Wayne & Fatman Scoop - When I Grow Up (Remix) (full) - listen
Lil’ Wayne is on everything! But that’s besides the point. This remix goes hard! Even though the Pussycat Dolls are hardly on the track, I am definitely digging the remix, produced by Darkchild and featuring a host of other cameos! It just seems like it would be a cool, radio-friendly track. I hear a bit of an MJ sample in the track as well. Love everyone’s delivery on this track.
♫ Usher - His Mistakes (full) - listen
Hmmm. Usher is gearing up to release “His Mistakes” for his third single from his latest LP, Here I Stand. Even though I like “His Mistakes” as an album cut, I’m not sure if I’m really all smiles about it being released as a single. “Love In This Club” was very misleading, as far as the rest of the content on the album. I really think that the label is trading low by releasing this as a single.
Check out Solange’s official album cover for her upcoming sophomore release SoL-Angel & the Hadley Street Dreams. The record is set to hit stores on August 26th.
KEYSHIA COLE UPDATE
Keyshia Cole is currently in the studio recording her third yet-untitled CD to be released late 2008. The singer is gearing up for a soon-to-be announced tour. She will also start taping the 3rd season of her hit BET reality show, “The Way It Is.” The second season was the highest rated program in the network’s history.
While recording the new record, it is reported that Keyshia will begin shooting a film based on her life.
Check out Nina Sky’s first official single, “Curtain Call” from their sophomore album, THE MUSICAL. The single features Rick Ross (who has the inet on buzz right about now..) and will be on radios soon.
THE MUSICAL we be released in October, via J Records/Polo Grounds Music. Production includes Kerry “Krucial” Brothers, Ryan Leslie, Salaam Remi, Cool & Dre, Stargate, Neo The Matrix & more.
♫ Ciara feat. Ludacris - High Price (full) - listen
Check out the real full version of Ciara’s “High Price.” It’s something about this song: I hate it, I love it, it confuses me, I get it. I just can’t get into some of the lyrics. Did she actually say that her hair looks softer than McDonald’s hamburger buns? I love the chorus, it’s so catchy, but I just can’t seem to allow myself to love it. I’m hoping that this isn’t the first single from the album, and I’m thinking that it won’t be. We’ll see, CiCi.
♫ Lloyd feat. Plies - Year of the Lover (full) - listen
I prefer the version without Plies, but whatever. I don’t think he does much for the song. I think it’s because when I think about Plies, I don’t think “lover” - I think it has something to do with how, uhm, vulgar he is? I think that it’ll bring some more attention to the song, however, which is slated to be Lloyd’s third single from his upcoming album, Lessons In Love, due out August 5th.
You might remember us featuring this group in our artist to look out for section at the top of ‘08, as well as our artist spotlight section. Proton is back with their new promo single for their upcoming mixtape, “Magazine Dreamz.”
They are currently are working on their new mixtape, the follow-up to their 2007 album, Girls & Ghetto Sh!t. The guys were in the studio, and were listening to Biggie and they did their own version of his joint, “Dreams.”
But Proton says they aren’t trying to sensationalize the concept in the song, but it’s simply a tribute to Biggie for their mixtape. They are definitely shooting to put their mixtape out within the next couple of months, as well as putting the finishing touches on their third album.
