NEW ARTIST: PAULA CAMPBELL

Thursday, June 28, 2007 |

There has been a soft buzz going on about Miss Paula Campbell for a while, but I think this is just the beginning as far as shedding light on Ne-Yo’s new protege. She’s been on tour with Ne-Yo for the past couple of months and has garnered some pretty good comments from reviews I’ve heard. Her first single, “Ain’t Nobody Stupid” is being added to radio. Although it’s not my favorite of the material I’ve heard from her, Paula is shooting a video for the song. The song really seems a little dated and I don’t think it’s a very good representation of her other work. But I think she has the potential to release a nice first album. Hope she doesn’t get lost in the mix of “R&B chicks…”

Paula’s debut, I Am Paula Campbell will be out sometime later in the year. For more information about Paula Campbell, log onto her official website, paulacampbell.com or make sure you hit her up on MySpace!

WATCHIN’ ASHANTI’S “SWITCH”…

Thursday, June 28, 2007 |

Rob the jewelry store and tell ‘em make me a grill…” No, I’m joking. But seriously, everything which Nelly’s signature yell-rap-sing (whatever it is, he’s made it his trademark) appears on really sounds like that to me. And the production on this doesn’t make it any easier for me to seperate the two. Or the subject matter. Nelly’s talking about grills while Ashanti croons about her favorite high heels!

On the BET Awards post-show, Ashanti said that she’d pretty much done everything herself on her latest project, which is due out in the fall. She also mentioned that they were in works of choosing a first single… so my assumption that with this leaking, “Switch” is not it. Even though I’m not really fan of Ashanti (or her voice), this is a fun song. However, not single worthy, it just seems like she went into the studio to have a good time with her man, Nelly. Although she’s still with The Inc. Records, I think that Ashanti is trying to mature a little bit and work with some other people on this next project, which I hear is titled This Is Me. Let’s hope that she can put together something that’s a little more stellar than her last effort, Concrete Rose.

NEW MUSIC FROM TEEDRA MOSES: “LOVE’S GONNA BE!”

Wednesday, June 27, 2007 |

teedra.jpg

One of R&B’s most slept on songbirds is back on the scene with a brand new song, which is surprisingly a duet (although I’m not positive who the male vocalist is - it sounds slightly like Trey Songz at times). Teedra Moses has been one of my favorite artists since late 2003, when her material from her masterful first album Complex Simplicity began to leak on the internet. It’s been circulating for a while that Teedra is set to release her sophomore album, Young Lioness sometime this year on TVT Records. It’s been a long time coming, so I hope this new song means something. I absolutely love the use of the sample, and Teedra’s voice just sounds as clear as crystal riding the track.

Although Teedra’s official site is a little out-dated, make sure you hit up her MySpace page for more information about upcoming shows, songs and the release of her upcoming sophomore album, “Young Lioness,” hopefully due out sometime before the year’s end. Thanks so much to Anne for the tip!

NOTE: Update about the male vocals… Nick Eden (thanks man!) just sent me the MySpace page for the male vocalist on the song, his name is LB. Check him out on MySpace.

ADINA HOWARD BRINGS YOU “PRIVATE SHOW”

Tuesday, June 26, 2007 |

Adina Howard - L.O.V.A.

Adina Howard has always been known to give us some little nasties since the beginning of time (Freak Like Me). For those of you who she’s not ringing a bell for, I know ya’ll remember her joint “The Second Coming” (after a long stint without releasing any music) with the Jamie Foxx collaboration, “T-Shirt & Panties.” It always seemed like she was always making sparadic appearances back onto the scene. For those who don’t know, Miss Howard is releasing a new album today, so if you’re a die hard fan, definitely go out and pick up the approprialelty-titled “Private Show.”

THE NEW MUSIC REVIEW

Monday, June 25, 2007 |

Sterling Simms feat. Jay-Z - Favorite Girl (full) - download
Although this song is from a mixtape and Sterling is crooning over Jay-Z’s popular “Song Cry,” there’s something that I really like about it. Although Sterling has already had two singles (”Jump Off” - which I absolutely hated, and “Nasty Girl” which I hoped would do really well), it seems like there’s been nothing heard about his project, which is supposed to be released on Def Jam. You may remember Simms from Jay-Z’s “Dig A Hole,” from his latest, Kingdom Come. I think he needs to kick out a single with Hov. Maybe that will put his project in the fastlane. It worked for Little Miss Sunshine…

T.I. - Respect This Hustle (full) - download
T.I. is really mad. No, I’m kidding. But, no, he is mad. “Respect This Hustle” finds T.I. arguing with himself at the beginning of the song. Which is okay, I guess, considering that’s the concept of the album, but I don’t know, it jus sounds sort of crazy upon first listen. I really enjoy the production of this song, though, it goes hard. It sounds like that chill club music that you can just groove to with your homies. Lyrically, I’m cool with it too. T.I. actually has one of my favorite flows.

NEW MUSIC FROM LIL’ MO: “SOMETIMES”

Monday, June 25, 2007 |

lilmo.jpg

Lil’ Mo makes her return to the scene with Jim Jones on “Sometimes.” I have never been a huge fan of Lil’ Mo (except for the stuff that she’s done on Missy’s albums, I’ve always loved her then) and I really always considered her to be a “hook girl” - but I like the feel of this song. It sort of takes me to a different place, and reminds me a lot of past summers. I haven’t neccessarily gotten into the lyrics, because that could either make or break the way the song made me feel, initially listening to it. Either way, I’m glad Lil’ Mo is making her back on to the scene. It seems like it’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from her, after her baby and all.

THE NEW MUSIC REVIEW

Sunday, June 24, 2007 |

T.I. feat. Jay-Z - Watch What You Say To Me (full) - download
This is the T.I. that I like. Several songs from his upcoming, “T.I. vs T.I.P.” have leaked, but not the full album. After hearing a few songs, I have to admit, that it’s kind of jogged my excitement for T.I.’s project, because I was a little worried at first. Although people really liked “Big Things Poppin’” off the strength, it just didn’t have that extra thing that a T.I. single has always had for me and then on top of that, I wasn’t really digging the Wyclef joint. We’ll see.

Q. Amey - Closer (full) - download
It’s really unfortunate to me that there haven’t been any updates on this project, nor any new singles since “Forever Girl” (produced by the Corner Boyz) dropped last summer. “Closer,” which is a B. Cox joint (shout out to my homie!) would be a really nice choice for a single. It is radio friendly and it would really go in the club, I think. I hope Blackground/Universal (?) can find it in their heart to give my homie some play.
