THE NEW MUSIC REVIEW

Chamillionaire feat. Slick Rick - Hip Hop Police (full) - download
I tried really hard to like this song, but it just really got on my nerves while hearing it. This track, coming from Chamillionaire’s next album “Ultimate Victory.” It honestly just became background music for me. I just couldn’t really get into it. I think I might have to just give it another try when I’m in a better mood.

Olivia feat. Missy Elliott - Cherry Pop (full) - download
I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it. But then again, I don’t think that you can go wrong with popular samples most of the time. This song kind of reminds me of Keyshia Cole’s new song. I think it’s because of the use of Missy Elliott and a very influential sample. But I could have sworn that Olivia had been dropped from G-Unit after the failure of her single, and the shelved “Behind Close Doors” album.

ALBUM REVIEWS: CHRISETTE MICHELE & MISS KELLY

Tuesday, June 19, 2007 |

chrisette.jpg

Chrisette Michele seemingly popped up out of nowhere - being on two big singles for, who some would call the greatest rappers in the game right now, but I’ve heard this girl’s name for a while. Her album takes me back to the ’90’s, it’s so very relaxing to just sit and listen. And though I can’t say that I’m completely into the material on the album, it is nicely produced and well put together. “I Am” (released today) was the perfect title. Chrisette’s voice is immaculate - it just floats and rides on every single melody. I’m pretty much sold on her. Her sound is different, her material is appropriate for her voice, and anything that I can just vibe and groove to without doing this most always does it for me. I’m simply in love with the fact that she’s not your typical “neo-soul” (whatever that means) artist.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: KEVIN MICHAEL

Monday, June 18, 2007 |

kevinmichael.jpg
Kevin Michael is a breath of fresh air for me. Signed to Downtown/Atlantic Records, with an album due out August 28th, and an EP available on iTunes, I think that Kevin Michael might be one of pop-soul’s best kept secrets. Born in Philly, Kevin has worked with hitmaker Wyclef Jean and fan favorite Lupe Fiasco. It just seems like there hasn’t been anyone besides Robin Thicke (who people love) and Justin Timberlake (who most of you guys hate) to fill that voice. I think what I dig most about this cat is his sincerity. And it doesn’t hurt that he pulls from Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Prince for his inspiration. “I don’t know where I begin and the music stops,” Kevin professes. And with a stellar EP, which introduces us to the material that will featured on his as-yet titled debut, I’m sure that Kevin will not disappoint. For more information on Kevin Michael, make sure you check him out on MySpace or hit up his official website, kevinmichael.com for more information about tours and releases.

Check out the opener to his “YaDig” EP (available on iTunes), “We All Want the Same Thing,” featuring Lupe Fiasco. It’ll really give you a feel for Mr. Michael’s sound.

THE NEW MUSIC REVIEW

Megan Rochell - My Mistake (full) - download
In all seriousness, I have no idea what’s going on with homegirl’s project. This is Ryan Leslie production, and one of his weaker once, I might add. It’s amazing to me that there is still music leaking from this girl. Not only that, but video surfaced of Ryan Leslie producing this song sometime last summer, and it’s just now leaking… Seriously, if this doesn’t stop, her whole entire album will be on the internet before she even gets a release date - much less, a second single to make up for the lack of the success of the Fabolous-featured and Darkchild-produced “The One You Need.”

T.I. feat. Eminem - Touchdown (snippet) - download
I don’t know if I’m feeling T.I. this time around. “Big Things Poppin’,” okay, it’s a cool song in the club, but it just doesn’t do to me what other T.I. singles have done. It’s almost like it doesn’t hit hard enough - it’s missing something. Didn’t dig the song from Wyclef too much either, and this snippet is leaving me cold right now. Maybe I just need to be patient and wait to hear some more material from the album. I just hope T.I. doesn’t try too hard pitting himself against… himself.

RANDOM NEW MUSIC…

Thursday, June 14, 2007 |

blaque.jpg

Blaque? Are you serious?! This is definitely random. I’ve been getting my e-mail box blown up about this. At first, I wasn’t biting because I thought that the song sounded a little dated (which I still do). I thought, initially, that Blaque had thrown in the towel after the failure of their single “Ugly,” featuring Missy Elliott, which was supposed to appear on their shelved album, “Torch.” I don’t know whether or not they’re signed to a new label, because last I heard, they’d been dropped. Not really feeling this new track too much. But I wanna see what’s in store for these three girls.

KANYE WEST & JOHN MAYER’S “BITTERSWEET”

Tuesday, June 12, 2007 |

kanye.jpg

People have been hitting me up non-stop about this song, but the truth of the matter is, it’s like 2 and a half years old. But I guess it’s cool, because this is the first time that there’s been a full CD quality version of it. Either way, “Bittersweet,” featuring John Mayer, was recorded during the “Late Registration” sessions. I’m glad to finally be hearing this song, I really like it. Not quite sure it didn’t make the cut for the last album, but I’m not sure how I would feel if it appeared on Kanye’s latest, which everyone is talking about. Just thought I’d post it up for those who had been e-mailing about it. Enjoy!

I GUESS IT IS SO EFFIN’ RAVEN!

Monday, June 11, 2007 |

raven_sym.jpg

To go along with Angel’s new post about the upgraded Miss Raven-Symone (does she even want to be called that anymore?), I thought that it would a perfect time to add on that Raven’s actually releasing another album, and has a brand new single out, titled “Got It Girl.” It looks like she’s traded her Disney-esque sound and look from her last album, “This Is My Time,” for something that’s a little more up to date, and age-appropriate. And I’d assume what labels think will sell these days. I guess along with that, she traded better vocals for better tracks, because Raven’s basically singing the same note through out the entire song. Either way, I respect her hustle. Get it, girl!
