♫ WHO SANG IT BETTER: LLOYD VS. STERLING ♫

♫ LLOYD - ALL I NEED

♫ STERLING SIMMS FEAT. THE DREAM - ALL I NEED

Seems as though Sterling Simm’s new single, featuring The Dream (with Jadakiss on the remix), was previously recorded by friend and follow R&B-crooner, Lloyd recorded the same song. To me, it sounds like Lloyd recorded the track by himself for his new album, Lesson In Love, which hits stores August 5th. But in order to drive buzz for Sterling, they put Dream on the rap to cause some more commotion around the project.

In any event, I must say, I appreciate Lloyd’s version more, vocally. He rides the track better to me. But you know we’ve gotta hear it from you guys too!

WHO SANG THE TRACK BETTER?

  • LLOYD (56%, 1,143 Votes)
  • STERLING SIMMS (23%, 468 Votes)
  • BOTH GUYS KILLED IT (17%, 344 Votes)
  • NEITHER IS THAT GREAT (5%, 104 Votes)

♫ WHO SANG IT BETTER: NICOLE WRAY VS. FANTASIA ♫

♫ NICOLE WRAY - TAKE YOUR MAN

♫ FANTASIA - BROKE

A couple of days ago, we posted up an unreleased song from Fantasia, entitled “Broke,” and I noticed that production is exactly the same of a Nicole Wray song that leaked a while ago entitled “I’ll Take Your Man.” Of course, it sounds like a Rich Harrison production from the drums and live instruments but we later found that it is produced by Midi Mafia.

Even though the song isn’t exactly the same, who do you guys think rode the beat better? I dig both songs, but what do you guys think?

♫ WHO SANG IT BETTER: KILEY DEAN VS. BRANDY ♫

♫ KILEY DEAN - ESCAPE

♫ BRANDY - ESCAPE

Years ago, during Timbaland’s short-lived reign with his first label, Beat Club Records, he signed a girl by the name of Kiley Dean, who actually was a former back-up singer for Britney Spears. Although she failed to release her first album, Simple Girl, which was in large part produced by Timbaland, she continued to pursue music and record songs. “Escape” was recorded years ago, but recently a version of the song Brandy recorded has leaked. The leaking of all this old Brandy stuff, I think, has a lot to do with the fact that she’s working on a follow-up to 2004’s underrated Afrodisiac.

WHO SANG “ESCAPE” BETTER?

  • BRANDY (54%, 1,574 Votes)
  • KILEY DEAN (25%, 736 Votes)
  • BOTH GIRLS KILLED IT (12%, 353 Votes)
  • NEITHER (8%, 235 Votes)

♫ WHO SANG IT BETTER: RYAN VS. SHAREEFA ♫

♫ RYAN LESLIE - DIAMOND GIRL

♫ SHAREEFA - DIAMOND GIRL

For this edition of ‘Who Sang It Better” we have Next Selection CEO Ryan Leslie and Disturbing the Peace singer Shareefa.

Some of you may remember Shareefa from her song “I Need A Boss” a couple years back. Her sophomore release, The Secret, is out later on this year and she used this song to speak on those rumors about her being dropped from Def Jam. Ryan Leslie, on the other hand, is best known for his work behind the scenes with Cassie and various other artists.

WHO SANG IT BETTER: RYAN or SHAREEFA?

  • RYAN LESLIE (48%, 1,360 Votes)
  • SHAREEFA (30%, 841 Votes)
  • BOTH (13%, 364 Votes)
  • NEITHER (9%, 267 Votes)

♫ WHO SANG IT BETTER? KARINA VS. CASSIE ♫

Friday, April 11, 2008 |

♫ KARINA PASIAN - OFFICIAL GIRL

♫ CASSIE - OFFICIAL GIRL

Just yesterday, Cassie’s new single, “Official Girl” surfaced on the internet. The new single, produced by Danja and penned by The Clutch, is the first single from Cassie’s sophomore effort. The thing about it is, 16 year-old Karina Pasian recorded the song as well. Karina (who is signed to Def Jam) has been making waves with her song “16 At War” and can throw down on the piano.

I actually believe in this song and I think it’s a good a look. Vocally, I’m not really impressed with either version, but I know that I do like Karina’s voice. I think that it’s just the vocal arrangement and production is meant to be underwhelming, so that’s why I’m not really impressed with either. But what do you think? Who sang it better?

WHO SANG IT BETTER: JAZMINE SULLIVAN vs. AMY WINEHOUSE

Tuesday, February 26, 2008 |

♫ Jazmine Sullivan - ‘Round Midnight

J Records signee Jazmine Sullivan and Grammy award winning Amy Winehouse are both amazing vocalists. Both ladies recorded the Thelonious Monk jazz classic, “‘Round Midnight” in recent years and put their own twist to it. It was interesting because it wasn’t until I listened to the words that I realized that it was even the same song. I just familiarized myself with the Amy Winehouse version, but I am quite familiar with Jazmine Sullivan’s version, considering that it was one of the first few records I’ve heard from her.

♫ Amy Winehouse - ‘Round Midnight

“‘Round Midnight” has been recorded in greater frequency than any other jazz standard composed by a jazz musician, so you’ve probably heard some more of your favorite artists sing it before. I can’t make a decision, but in my opinion, both versions are great in their own way. But what do you think? Who sang it better? The troubled artist or the young newcomer? [ THANX TO MASON FOR SENDING THIS IN ]

WHO SANG IT BETTER: ONEREPUBLIC VS. BLU CANTRELL

Wednesday, February 20, 2008 |

♫ ONEREPUBLIC - APOLOGIZE

♫ BLU CANTRELL - APOLOGIZE (REPLY)

Haven’t heard much from Miss Blu Cantrell in a long time, so it’s so interesting to me that she decided to take the instrumental from the popular crossover hit, “Apologize.” The track, which appears on Timbaland’s Shock Value album, was recorded by OneRepublic and the original version appears on their debut album, Dreaming Out Loud.

I’ve gotta be quite honest: I hate Blu’s version. That song is beautiful to me and it’s just not meant for all of that. Not only that, what is she supposed to doing - or what is she trying to do? Is there a new album in the works for Ms. Cantrell? In any event, it’s just way too much over the song. But who do you think sang it better?
