Last week a video made by the non-profit ‘Invisible Children’ went viral, highlighting the head of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and Ugandan warlord, Joseph Kony. In their reality check section, NBC Nightly News went to a remote village in Uganda and spoke to many survivors of Kony’s crime’s against humanity. They even met up with one of his former child brides, who doesn’t agree with the video and says it is only making him more famous.
In related news, Ben Keesey chief executive of ‘Invisible Children’ released a second video this week defending their questionable spending practices and explaining what they do with all their funds. They have been under scrutiny since the video dropped because none of their money actually goes to Uganda or any of the children affected by Kony. He told the TODAY show last week that, “The truth about Invisible Children is that we are not an aid organization, and we don’t intend to be. I think people think we’re over there delivering shoes or food. But we are an advocacy and awareness organization.” Hmmm.
Also make sure to check out a YOUTUBE response to the KONY2012 video below by Journalist Rosebell Kagumire (from Uganda). She doesn’t agree with the sensationalized propaganda in the video and tweeted, “I want the faces of children who were abducted known to the world not Kony.” #TRUTH Continue
On Sun., Feb. 26, 17-year-old Trayvon “Trey” Martin was visiting his father at his home in The Retreat at Twin Lakes, a gated community in Sanford, 20 miles north of Orlando, Florida. During a break from watching the NBA All-Star game, he walked to a nearby convenience store for snacks, which included Skittles for his 13-year-old brother Chad. While on his way back to his father’s home, he encountered George Zimmerman, a 26-year-old college student and self-appointed captain of The Retreat at Twin Lakes neighborhood watch.
