NEWS ROUNDUP: GA EXECUTION STAYED / NASCAR OFFICIALS FIRED / BALTIMORE POLITICIAN MURDERED

Troy Anthony Davis said he was “thankful to God” after learning that his execution had been stayed when he saw it on television.

The U.S. Supreme Court granted a last-minute reprieve to the 39-year-old less than two hours before he was to be executed for the 1989 slaying of Mark MacPhail, an off-duty Savannah, Georgia, police officer.

Seven of the nine witnesses who initially testified that Davis was the killer had recanted. There was no physical evidence presented at his trial, and no weapon was found. But Davis’ petitions for a new trial had been denied. The U.S. Supreme Court was the last option for Davis to have his execution postponed.

NEWS: O.J. SIMPSON TRIAL STARTS / KELIS ACQUITTED OF ALL CHARGES

ojs.jpg

O.J. Simpson and his attorney Yale Galanter arrive at court for the opening day of his trial at Clark County Regional Justice Center on Monday in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Simpson is charged with a total of twelve counts including kidnapping, armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon stemming from an alleged incident involving the theft of his sports memorabilia last year.

KELIS ACQUITTED OF ALL CHARGES

Over the weekend, singer Kelis was acquitted of all charges brought against her by the Miami Beach Police Department in March 2007. Evidence admitted at the trial established that she did not interfere with any police investigation at the time and that she did not engage in any disorderly conduct. There was no basis for her arrest and she was also found innocent of any charges brought against her for resisting arrest.

Kelis said, “I’m thrilled that justice prevailed in the end. Racial profiling is a very serious matter. Unfortunately, most victims learn to deal with this form of harassment in their daily lives because they feel that they don’t have a voice or because they’re not able to absorb the costs to legally fight it in court. I hope that this sheds light on the fact that wearing a uniform and carrying a badge does not allow you to act above the law.”

Her attorney, Ira N. Loewy added that Kelis plans to bring a civil suit against the Miami Beach Police for the violation of her civil rights and unlawful arrest.

50centsmile.gif

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson was all smiles leaving the Suffolk County Courthouse Monday, while the child’s mother, Shaniqua Tompkins, was not as pleased. A judge ruled that 50 Cent could now see his son on alternating weekends.

The judge also granted Tompkins an order of protection and because it forbids Jackson from coming near her, she will drop off their 11 year-old son Marquise every other Friday night at a police precinct in Queens, where Jackon’s mom or driver will pick him up. The feuding exes are due back in court on October 22, 2008.

As for 50 Cent, when asked what’s his future plans are, he told the press,

“I’m gonna go hang out with some ho’s, write some music, make some movies, continue to kick it.”
