POLITICS: OBAMA NAMES NATIONAL SECURITY TEAM / MICHELLE GETS THANKS AND NEW RING / RICE PLAYS FOR THE QUEEN

President-elect Barack Obama unveiled his national security team at a press conference in Chicago on Monday. Obama said, “The time has come for a new beginning, a new dawn of American leadership to overcome the challenges of the 21st century. We will strengthen our capacity to defeat our enemies and support our friends. We will renew old alliances and forge new and enduring partnerships.”

Obama named former rival Hillary Rodham Clinton as his choice for secretary of state and said he would keep Robert Gates as defense minister as the incoming administration seeks to wind down the U.S. role in Iraq.

Washington lawyer Eric Holder was named attorney general and Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano as homeland security secretary. He also announced two senior foreign policy positions outside the Cabinet: campaign foreign policy adviser Susan Rice as U.N. ambassador and retired Marine Gen. James L. Jones as national security adviser.

The cover of the Dec. 8 issue of The New Yorker features President-elect Barack Obama vetting the First Puppy. The term “vetting” actually means “to submit an animal to examination by a veterinarian”.

Barry Blitt drew the cover and is the cartoonist responsible for the controversial terrorist fist-jabbing cover earlier this year with Obama and First Lady-elect Michelle Obama.

Regarding their pick for a pup, the Obamas have stated they want a mutt, but that it needs to be hypoallergenic and won’t be a girly dog.

RICE TO BE UN AMBASSADOR

Dr. Susan Rice - no relation to outgoing Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice - is slated to become the U.S. face at the United Nations.

An ex-National Security Council member and former assistant secretary of state, Rice worked as a top foreign policy advisor to the campaign of President-elect Barack Obama.

In case you missed it, President-elect Barack Obama and First Lady-elect Michelle Obama sat down with Barbara Walters for a Barbara Walters Special which aired Wednesday night.

The interview covered, among other things, a potential bailout of the auto industry, bonuses for bank executives and Obama’s negotiations to retain his BlackBerry. Obama also details his biggest fear, and it’s not what you might think.

President-elect Barack Obama leavs Manny’s Coffee Shop and Deli with his lunch during a break from his transition office at the federal building Friday in Chicago, Illinois. Obama ordered a corned beef sandwich and greeted customers before leaving the restaurant.

Obama is currently picking members for his cabinet while transitioning to the White House. The inauguration will be held on January 20th 2009 in Washington D.C.

In related news, Records from a cell phone used by President-elect Obama were improperly breached, apparently by employees of the cell phone company, Verizon Wireless said Thursday. The Obama transition team was notified Wednesday by Verizon of the breach, said team spokesman Robert Gibbs. He said the president-elect no longer uses the phone.
