POLITICS: TX DEMOCRATIC DEBATE RECAP

Friday, February 22, 2008 |

The last time Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama debated was before the Super Tuesday contests where both scored big in those races, splitting two dozen contests from coast to coast. However, Obama has enjoyed ten consecutive wins since Super Tuesday.

The last time the two debated, it was civil. This time, not so much.

After forty-five minutes of civility, things took a turn for the worse after Clinton stated “lifting whole passages from someone else’s speeches is not change you can believe in. It’s change you can Xerox.”

POLITICAL ROUND UP: LEWIS SWITCHING TEAMS? / BUSH & ROMNEY ENDORSE MCCAIN / SENATE EXPANSION OF SURVEILLANCE ACT

Rep. John Lewis, one of the most prominent black supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton, said Thursday night he planned to cast his vote as a superdelegate for Sen. Barack Obama, according to a New York Times article.

However, a spokeswoman for the former civil rights leader told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Friday morning the story is inaccurate. Lewis’s press secretary, Brenda Jones, did not elaborate and did not respond to a message requesting clarification.

The Associated Press also reported Thursday that U.S. Rep. David Scott was discussing a possible defection to Obama, who has a narrow lead over the former First Lady in a desperately close race for the Democratic nomination. Scott represents a district that gave more than 80% of its vote to Obama in the Georgia primary on Super Tuesday.

The mainstream media has continued to make the battle between Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton an issue of both race and gender, particularly stressing the difficult time that black women have faced before heading to the polls.

According to a recent Washington Post article published on The Root, Washington D.C. Council member Marion Barry (D-Ward 8), who recently endorsed Obama, mentioned that the momentum for Obama can’t be denied.

“Whether anyone admits it, race and gender are a factor in everyone’s minds. Not the factor, but a factor,” he said. “The white Democrats have taken us for granted. They always thought our vote was there. The Republicans have ignored us. At last, we’re in a leveraged position in the Democratic Party.”
