EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW w/ RIHANNA
RIHANNA SHOUTING OUT CONCRETELOOP AND THE VISITORS
I had the pleasure of interviewing Rihanna last week, who was very sweet. We addressed her new look, sound, and how she feels about these crazy rumors people like to put her in.
I could not include everyone’s questions, including the hundred referring to Beyonce. I mean, we can give that a rest seeing how the UK blasted Bee’s name on Ri-Ri’s album cover already. But, thank you guys for really submitting to this one.
Now lets see if all of you same people will go pick up “Good Girl Gone Bad” today…
—————-
Tianna: Lets start off with the obvious - we see you have a new look and a new sound for “Good Girl Gone Bad”. What prompted this change?
Rihanna: This change was just really an expression of how I’m feeling right now - in my life and in my career. I felt like I had enough of being forced into a particular image and sound, that’s why I call the album “Good Girl Gone Bad” because I really didn’t care anymore. I just wanted to do what I wanted to do and this is who I am now.
Tianna: Let’s talk more about your new album, what were some of your music influences for this record, compared to your last two albums? I’ve read a couple of reviews that have stated it has more of an alternative sound, so how would you describe the overall vibe of this album?
Rihanna: I would say, its a very edgy album. It’s hard to categorize it in a specific genre because it’s so diverse. Every song has a different element of a different genre. We got rock influences, we got Caribbean influences, some pop in there, as well as a 80s vibe in it. It’s a really cool sounding album, its fun and very entertaining - every song takes you to a different place and that’s what I love about it.
Tianna: How crazy was it to work with Jay on your first single - and THEN have him show up in your video? How was it working with the boss?
Rihanna: Absolutely a honor. Like…even saying it right now, hearing you say that makes me feel good because people go thorough their career dreaming of a collaboration with Jay Z and hear I am - my first single on my third album. It was perfect timing, the perfect song to do with him and just being on the video set, it had me tripped out a little bit because it was like “wow, I’m shooting a video with Jay Z”. it’s crazy!
Tianna: Right…
Rihanna: And I have to perform with him in a few days at the MTV Movie Awards and its the first time performing together so its VERY nerve racking but, very exciting.
Tianna: Yea, that has to be…and you’re 19 right?
Rihanna: Yes.
Tianna: And you have three albums in three years, which is kind of unheard of to some people because some do still view you as a new face in the game. Yet, you have been doing this for a while and doing it back to back. So is it safe to say we will see an album from you in 2008?
Rihanna: (laughs) You know what? God knows because I definitely did not plan to put three albums out in the last two years! When I say it, it sounds psychotic…
Tianna: (laughs)
Rihanna: But we did it and it sounded great when we did it. Everytime we put an album out, it felt like perfect time. This album didn’t feel rushed, it came effortlessly and it felt like the perfect time. You know, its summertime, I love summertime and I always bring a single out for the summer. Next, I’m not sure if I’ll have an album out in 2008 because I will probably stop do a couple of movies before getting back to another album. But, you never know what’s going to happen - it all depends on how we feel…
Tianna: Being in this business for three years, have you adjusted to all the crazy rumors and comparisons people put you in - particularly with another very famous, beautiful and hardworking singer like yourself who is also linked to Jay. We really don’t need to say her name because you know who I’m talking about. Are you just use to it now?
Rihanna: I wouldn’t say I’ve completely adjusted because every rumor hits you in a different way.
Tianna: Right.
Rihanna: Some, you think are funny - then some gets frustrating - then you just start to ignore them. But, every time there’s a new one, it hits you like brand new. All over again, its starts feeling funny, then frustrating, then you ignore it. Every time I hear a new rumor, its like wow - and I just know they’re going to keep coming so I have to bear with it and not get too upset. You just have to ignore it sometimes.
Tianna: Lets go back to your new look, which I absolutely love. It seems sort of glam rock,
Rihanna: Yeah….
Tianna: How would you personally describe this look of yours?
Rihanna: Yeah it is glam rock. The new image is definitely glam rock.
Tianna: Yeaaaaahhhh!
Rihanna: Sometimes we do it a little bit girlish. I also like to wear sneakers but add the shades, gloves, and t-shirts. Most of time though, its definitely glam rock! We added a little bit of grunge in it too…
Tianna: Ok, now I’m going to ask you some questions from the readers over at CL…
Rihanna: Okay.
Tianna: One of our readers wanted to what is it like to be a Covergirl and what is your favorite beauty product because a lot of readers commented on your skin?
Rihanna: Its a lot of fun being a Covergirl because I’m so against being too girly.
Tianna: (laughs)
Rihanna: Like…THAT keeps me in touch with my girly side because I like to be so hardcore sometimes and anti-innocent that I use to have to portray. Now, that really keeps me intouch with my feminine side, I feel fun again and girl - its fun playing around with the makeup. I like a lot of lip gloss so, that would be my favorite beauty product….as well as shimmer for the skin. It makes the skin look good!
Tianna: Another reader wanted to know, what has been one of the highlights of your career so far?
Rihanna: One of the highlights…honestly, having “Umbrella”. “Umbrella” just became number one in so many different countries. It’s number in the U.K off digital downloads only, which has never been done by a female before. So I made history there and astounded me, being number one. Then I came back here and got an email saying that “Umbrella” just became number one on the Billboard 100 chart. Making history and just making that impression - like, that makes me think this will my biggest album with this big single. This new me and this new project is definitely going to be the highlight of my career, and its something that I know I will never forget for as long as I am doing this.
Tianna: What other artists would you love to work with that you haven’t had the chance to yet?
Rihanna: I would like to work with Andre 3000, and (inaudible at the second name - apologies).
Tianna: Alot of our male visitors wanted to know if you’re single and dating…
Rihanna: HA! I’m single…but not dating. No.
Tianna: (laughs) Okay. If you were not an entertaining, where do you think you would be?
Rihanna: I would still be in boring school studying psychology. I hate school so thank God I’m doing what I’m doing.
Tianna: (laughs)
Rihanna: I never liked school.
Tianna: Awww, I feel you. Alot of our visitors in the Caribbean wanted to say thanks for representing for them and one of them wanted to know your favorite Caribbean dish?
Rihanna: I like Curry chicken. That would have to be my very favorite.
Tianna: Yum. Ok Rihanna - last but not least, can you give a quick shoutout to the readers over at Concreteloop?
Rihanna: Yea. i just want to tell - thank you for all of the support. Thank you…you know, I read your comments, I go on Concreteloop sometimes and ya know, people are not very aware of that but, I just want you to know I am reading your comments and thank you for all the love. Even the haters…
Tianna: (laughs)
Rihanna: Thank you anyway. Because you’re encouraging me to do better (laughs). I can’t wait for people to hear the album and get it, so people will see…that I made a good album!
Tianna: You really go on Concreteloop and read some of the things here?
Rihanna: I do, I do.
Tianna: Because we post about you ALOT. You’re always in the media girl. You’re really doing your thing and becoming somthing so I wish you the best in success.
Rihanna: Thank you so much.
Tianna: Thank you - I know you have a lot to do so thanks for taking the time to speak to us today.
Rihanna: Alright, my pleasure.
Go pick up “Good Girl Gone Bad” IN STORES NOW!!

so if the first two looks weren’t you, then you were faking it? next album, she’s going to come out with a new look and say she’s truly found herself. she CAN’T sing nor can she dance. she’s not a performer nor is she an entertainer. she’s another manufactured product shoved in our faces and people are falling for it. unlike her, at least brit and janet have other things to make up for their lack of talent.
i understand you did your best tianna but the interview was still a snooze just like her performances are. this is her THIRD album in TWO years. still no grammy nods, no major award wins and her first really big major performance was at the MTV movie awards.
i might sound like a hater but i’m not. i appreciate REAL talent. the girl is absolutely beautiful so she should just model!

Like Tianna said u cant please EVERYBODY! ok Tianna this is not a down play on what u do. But check this out, people are here hating on a JOURNALIST! Tianna did her job! She did it with her own style and flava! I am a nurse and certain things are strictly by the book and somethings I can put my personal flava on! Some patients appreciate some dont!
And thats what Tianna did! A lot of journalist take their jobs seriously! Whether they are interviewing ray-ray down the street or RHIANNA!

And Tianna, girl if you don’t stop trying to explain to these freebasers! You see I don’t cosign for Angel to apologize for a damn thang she does on CL! If they don’t like her flow, she tell em where they can go! I suggest you do the same, because these rookies don’t know this business like we do! Tell em to get off the stage like Reggie told Eddie Murphy in “The Nutty Professor I”!

Whaddup, I do have audio but, it keep coming in and out and all in all - I need to find new microphone equipment. If people really would like clips, shot me an email. Plus somebody was calling me while I was interviewing her and I was so pissed lol. We do better interviewing in person!
Rihanna still does have an accent - I wouldn’t say she’s completely Americanized lol.

Rihanna portrayed herslef as quite an academic in her first album saying she liked to read and all that. Since she is trying real hard with this good girl gone bad image, she has to say she neer liked school, Dad used to be on crack etc.. to make us buy her BS image. Gurl puhleeeaze. Call me a hater. You know what I am sayng is true. I am not a Beyonce fan, but it is very noticeable how she has stopped mentioning Beyonce in every interview, contrary to her earlier days.
I had no idea that this chic has still not won a Grammy. What a load of hype.
By the way, her MTV performance was wackity wack. A singer she is not. A performer, she is NOT either. So what is she?

i dont care what nobody say, riri is a pretty girl and she sounds nice on her albums but she does not have a good singing voice when she sings live, and she will never in my eyes be able to be compared to beyonce, because beyonce is already an icon, look at how much she has accomplished, i dont even know why peole keep comparing the two because there is no comparison, riri is fresh meat, beyonce is a been there done that, i think people just want a reason to hate on bey, thats like i would never compare witney to bey because witney is a icon before bey, rihanna should be compared to people that are new to this game. thats like not having respect for the elderly, if your not young minded you will know what im talking about, im not trying to say bey is your elder im just using and example of her being in the game for a long time and then somebody new comes along nomatter the age and you lose all respect for the elder and give it all to the next. i hope everybody understands what im trying to say, because i can say it better then i can type it.

IF YOU ARE NOT FEELING RHIANNA THATS YOU BUT TO SAY THAT JANET OR BRIT ARE ANYTHING BETTER IS BULL. THEY (JANET AND BRIT) HAD STYLISTS AND LEBELS CREATING THEIR IMAGE , STYL, AND APPEAL ALSO. Men go to a concert to see the whole ish, not just to hear a great voice and see a cute face!
Women like Bexy and RiRi come with voice, beauty and booty! Brandy and Monica nem were cute with big voices, but they didn’t have the curves that these women have! Hell, I can tell time by Bexy’s hour glass figure! Hey now!

You know I don’t have the first two albums but after hearing the third album I will be getting all three. I am definitely a fan of Rhi Rhi. I think she’s beautiful and talented in her own right and I applaud her for breaking out of the mold that america was so desperate to put and keep her in. Brava, I say. Brava. Everytime Umbrella comes on, my speakers go up because I want to people to hear how hot this song is if they haven’t already. It’s nice to see someone else doing big things and I’m glad Jay finally took notice and gave you the respect you deserve by jumpin on this track!. Luv CL you’re always on point with yours. THE REASON I SAID THE INTERVIEW WAS BORING BECAUSE YOU BASICALLY ASKING THE SAME BASIC QUESTIONS LIKE EVRYONE ELSE. I’M NOT SAYING YOU HAD ASK HER ABOUT RUMORS AT ALL BUT YOU COULD’VE ASK QUESTIONS TO GIVE AN IDEA OF WHAT TYPE A PERSON SHE IS (i.e. WHAT MAKES YOU MAD? WHO ARE YOU LISTENING TO THESE DAYS OR WHATS A GOOD DAY LIKE FOR YOU?).

this is to…darkaqua_30 said, at best you wish you were Rhi Rhi or the idol she claims to love. Either way next the definition of a hater you’re number 1. Get it together, by writing what you did in hopes that she will read it will not affect her life, career or her money . So why don’t you keep your focus on praising What’s her name that can’t even articulate a sentence or even explain her own lyrics and Rihanna supporters will do what we do which to support a different artist who is bringing something different to the table. Matter of fact since you yourself have a way with words maybe you can come up with an English lesson for Jayz’s lady trophy and hopes she reads it. Maybe her next song will be about you! LOL.

I wish I still had my Ghanian accent like Rihanna does w/ hers. It’s not my fault, I came here(United States) when I was fairly young and still growing so it was bound to happen, but I still know how to speak my language pretty well so it’s all good. I don’t think Rihanna has talent, but she stays on her grind, I suppose, so thats works for her. I can’t say much about her or the album without sounding like some hater so I’ll just shut up and drive to work, lol. Good luck girl!

i love this quote!
ALSO WANTED TO MENTION THAT WE NEED TO STOP COMPARING EACH OTHER. THE SAME THING WAS DONE WHEN TYRA ENTERED THE MODELING WORLD. PEOPLE WANTED TO PIT HER AGAINST NAOMI BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF PRESENCE OF BLACK MODELS. THERE CAN BE MANY, NOT JUST ONE BLACK SINGER WHO IS SUCCESSFUL. ALL THESE COMPARISONS ARE CRAZY!
RHIANNA IS AN ENTERTAINER IN HER OWN RIGHT. DROPPING 3 ALBUMS IN 3 YEARS SHOULD BE ENOUGH SAID (AND I DONT HAVE TO MENTION ALBUM SALES, AND RADIO PLAY)

BUT RHIANNA IS A NEW ARTIST AND IT IS AMAZING SHE IS COMING OUT WITH SO MUCH MUSIC PEOPLE ARE ENJOYING.
IT IS TRULY RIDICULOUS TO COMPARE HER TO PEOPLE WHO ARE SEASONED VETS IN THE GAME. UR ONLY FOOLING URSELF WITH THAT SHIT

bk mary sounded like shit too when she first came out
all these rap artists protraying something they are not and being derogatory and you are picking at someones style. Mary j has a stylist too, she isnt responsible for her complete look. Every actor/actress/singer is given an image so dont knock her for it!
knock some of these REAL FAKE people like kim Kardashian and her fake assets and in the limelight for basically doing nothing. Rhi rhi is selling records, selling out concerts, and doing it big.
people wany to talk about her lack of singing skills, and her style….yet like someone said before you praise Janet Jackson for whispering and having a body ( that she clearly paid for) if her voice and style are all you have to bring up then its blatant that you all are jealous and probabyly at a 9-5 as we speak..you wish you could be on an island in a bikini looking as baging as she did….haterz haha
————————————————-
Mary still sounds like ish sometimes when she’s performing, no doubt, but I’m not even talking about what Rhianna sounds like. Mary’s music has soul. Mary’s style (of music) has always been the same. As far as Janet, I’ll be one of the first people to admit that she doesn’t have vocal chops. I never listened to a Janet track, expecting her to blow me away vocally, but you could always look foward to some hot dance moves, and a good show from Janet. I guarantee you, know one who’s ever been to a Janet concert bought the ticket to hear her mind blowing vocals!
Rhianna is coming to her own, but it’s still no more than an IMAGE, like 98% of other entertainers. She’s not a good singer, she’s rather boring in interviews and on TV, and she doesn’t thrill me with her moves. SUE ME!

ALL U MARY J FANS ———————–
i dont feel mary is any different in fact ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO HATE UMBRELLA AND LUV MARY J WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW MARY J WANTED THE SONG BUT RHI GOT IT!
Mary J. Blige wanted to record Umbrella, but Rihanna fucked the songwriters persuaded the songwriters to give it to her instead.
Rihanna told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: “Any songwriter would die for Mary to sing one of their songs. So I just prayed that I got it. It was perfect for me - it had a West Indian groove.
“When I saw one of the songwriters at the Grammy Awards, I went up to him and said, ‘Listen, ‘Umbrella’ is my song.’
“He must have thought I was really pushy and laughed it off. But I held his face and I turned it back to my own, ‘No, I’m serious, I need ‘Umbrella’.
“Two days later we found out the song was mine.”
RHIANNA IS SMART AND KNOWS HOW TO GET WHAT SHE WANTS AT A YOUNG AGE. STOP COMPARING HER TO OTHER FEMALE ARTISTS SHES NOT R&B AND SHE NOT POP OR ROCK OR CARRIBEAN , SHE IS RHIANNA…
MARY J IS MARY J..THEY HAVE DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS…ONE IS FROM AN ISLAND THE OTHER FROM THE STREETS OF NY SO THEY ARE DIFFERENT..SOUNDS, IMAGE, APPEAL, LOOKS.

idk she’s a sweet girl but i don’t buy the “bad girl” image. just like i never bought britney’s “i’m so sweet image”. i see right through that nonsense
and SHE’S NOT ORIGINAL. someone on here said that she is a fashion trendsetter. no she’s not. what has she done that ppl are copying? the hairstyle has certainly been done before by others like beckham, runway models etc. her style is bee at times and fefe at others (yes i said fefe b/c apparently i hear that they are cool with each other and riri likes fefe’s style. naturally i’m assuming that she liked the style so much that she “borrowed” some of it). and her music is not groundbreaking at all

Rihanna, since you’re reading the blog, you’re a very beautiful girl but I’m worrying a lil bit about your health. Put some clothes on you might catch a cold, especially at that age, know what I mean?

oh yeah and just an observation.
i feel that whenever a black person doesn’t act like the stereotypical black girl, other black people always think she’s original and different without realizing that there is another world out there. riri to me has assimilated to the mainstream celeb culture while other R&B black artists have not. from the clothes she wears to her hairstyle she is channeling looks that i have seen on other white celebrities but not really on black celebrities (besides kelis, fefe, and some others). the only truly original black celebrities to me are the ones who helped define hollywood history like tina turner. when she was out, there was no one like her but the same can’t be said for girls like riri, bee, amerie, etc. all the same

I HAVE TO ADMIT THIS WAS A SHORT AND QUITE BORING INTERVIEW. NO HARD-HITTING QUESTIONS. THE QUESTIONS THAT WERE ASKED WERE A LITTLE LIKE KISS-ASS QUESTIONS…LIKE YOU WERE AFRAID TO HURT HER FEELINGS IF REAL QUESTIONS WERE ASKED.

And quit calling the girl a sellout just because she doesn’t stick to carribean music, if she’s ecclectic and loves all kinds of music I don’t see what’s wrong with that.

@ # 130 new yorker, I couldn’t agree w/ you more. I’m from NY too…i guess great minds think alike.
I like Rhianna. Her music is to young for me (i’m in my 20’s), but I’m sure my neices & nephews will be lined up for it.
I have to say as a genral rule, I’m a little sick of the over manufactured pop star who eventually starts doing movies, endorsments etc. Next will be the perfum, clothing line, doll etc. Music is in a very sorry state.

Her album is a masterpiece to me, the best out of the 3, (this year has been the year of the 3: Spiderman 3, Pirates 3, Shrek 3, Rihanna’s 3rd album). I bought it today and have been bumping it from start to finish, each song is better and better!

I need to know…were some of the questions sent to Rihanna prior to the actual interview? I ask because there is a distinct difference in her answers in the first part of the interview. They sound very formal & educated. When you get to the second part of the interview, it’s almost like it gets dumbed down. She repeats herself a couple of times unnecessarily.
I detest that ridiculous Umbrella song. She needs to fire whoever wrote that song. And if she was different from the rest of the pop tarts she would be taking a stand and not taking such adult pictures. She’s 19, the majority of her fan base is probably pre-teen & teen and very impressionable.

Rihanna is representing island girls and I’m proud of her. The album is different - not R&B at all - pop and rock with a tinge of reggae. I never thought I’d get into pop and rock like this. My favourite tracks are Breakin Dishes,Shut Up & Drive, Rehab and Good Girl Gone Bad. Breakin Dishes and Shut Up & Drive are great for the gym i.e. they pump you up when you’re working out. Rehab and Good Girl Gone Bad have the acoustic guitar in them that makes them so folksy. Great job Rihanna and don’t fall into the temptations of other stars i.e. go bankrupt or end up on drugs and alchol. Rihanna will be here in Toronto, Canada next week at Best Buy signing CDs, I think I will go check it out.

I’m just baffled by all the attention she’s getting. She is not a great singer AT ALL. The only reason she became famous was because she was at the right place and right time. It disturbs me because i know plenty of woman with great singing talent and looks who are still struggling, but i have NO CLUE WHY IN THE WORLD SHE IS FAMOUS. Not to compare, i’m not a big beyonce fan either, but she CAN’T TOUCH Beyonce-who has the looks and voice. If a woman was talented then fine, but can you actually say this chic has talent? Be Serious! Beyonce has talent, Alicia Keys has talent. But Rihanna, i swear i laugh because she is just a manufactured peice of nothing! Her new look is just a phase and there is no “good girl gone bad”, she’s just a 19 yr old bimbo who’s brainwashed some to think she can actually sing, when she can’t, but some still choose to get into this media hype. She didn’t write Umbrella, she just sang it. Actaully she BEGGED for it as she says in interviews. Anyone could have sung it and got to #1. Oh right, but it’s still “her” song (laughs). It’s not her singing that’s making her succeed, it’s just the hype and desperate, tasteless individuals whose standard for quality music has decreased so much, that they will just put up with anything/anybody who’s ready to please, but more importantly lacks substance!. She is such a waste of time in the American music industry. It just irks me! Do you actually think this chic has talent? Be Serious!!!! Jay-Z is investing time into her and i just don’t understand WHY. He’s a lyrical genius and she is just so superficial in every way. Everytime i hear about her i am quite mystified. I actually like Umbrella and i’m not going to lie i downloaded it, but anyone could have sung that song just as good. I’m just voicing my opinion folks, sorry if i offended anyone. Don’t get defensive, i’m just telling you like it is.

To Rihanna (since you’re reading):
Not a hater, but am honestly an ex-fan (lost me after Pon De Replay). Would probably consider once you stop trying to fool yourself and the public and get your own look. Even with your new “glam rock” style you’re still channeling that other BEAUTIFUL LIAR we all know and love. You know who you’re channeling and you refuse to give her her props. You did in the beginning and now you’re smelling yourself. IF IT WEREN’T FOR HER GIVING HER MAN PERMISSION TO DO THE SINGLE, YOU WOULDN’T BE #1. The crowd was lost after Jay left that stage at MTV and a lot had a look on their faces like they wanted to sit down - they looked bored and confused. Give up the dancing and singing - it’s not for you. Singing around your house isn’t the same projection you have to give when singing live and you CLEARLY can’t do it. You’re floating on your looks, which are average at best because you always look like a yesterday or last week version of your IDOL (she is still your idol isn’t she? Or do you think you’re bigger than her now - lol.)
UPGRADE yourself babe.
My Response to you is…at best you wish you were Rhi Rhi or the idol she claims to love. LOL.
Also to any other haters who think Mary should have gotten the song. Honestly it would have been a totally different song. Their voices are totally different but Rhi Rhi brings that island vibe and that’s why the song is so successful. Besides Mary’s been in the game a hot minute and she’s only getting older, so how about letting someone else shine.
Singing off RIHANNA’S #1 FAN!
