UNCLE LUKE SUES 50 CENT.
50 Cent has been hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit over his hit single “In Da Club,” claiming the lyrics to the song were lifted from an earlier recording by Luther Campbell. Attorney Joseph Weinberger, owner of Lil’ Joe Records, filed the lawsuit in Miami federal court, claiming 50’s famous “Go shorty, it’s your birthday” lines were actually lifted from Campbell’s song “It’s Your Birthday,” which was originally released on Campbell’s 1994 album Still a Freak for Life. Weinberger once represented Campbell and obtained the copyrights to albums by the 2 Live Crew and Luke as a solo artist after Campbell was forced into bankruptcy. (read more)
STAR JONES EXPLODES DURING A RADIO INTERVIEW.
It was the dial tone heard ’round the city on yesterday morning. “The View” co-host and fledgling self-help author Star Jones Reynolds exploded during a phone interview with Star 94 Atlanta, dissed their disrespectful, inappropriate lines of questioning and hung up. The Q&A went into free fall when McCoy asked Jones about the ongoing rumor that she had her alleged gastric bypass surgery at a hospital in Atlanta, a clearly emotional Jones questioned the duo’s ethics, informed the pair “I don’t discuss gossip!” and promptly left the airwaves. BOBBY & WHIT ARE NOT GETTING DIVORCED.
Bobby Brown is brushing off reports that he and wife Whitney Houston are headed for divorce court. “The rumors are wrong,” Brown told PEOPLE on Thursday. “They’re false.” Asked by PEOPLE on Thursday how the story started, Brown replied, “I really couldn’t tell you. They say I said something about it, but I joke a lot. … I don’t think I said it, but if I did it was a joke. Trust me. … It’s someone that got the words mixed up.” (read more)
GIRLFRIENDS SPIN-OFF?
UPN is looking to spin off its hit comedy “Girlfriends” by ordering a “backdoor” pilot to air as an episode of the long-running series later this season. The potential spin-off will feature an all-new group of characters, women in the lives of professional football players. “Girlfriends,” now in its sixth season, revolves around the lives and loves of four women, a restaurateur, a divorcee, a free-spirited vegan and a self-involved married woman. The show’s creator, Mara Brock Akil, is set to write the spin-off episode and would executive produce the new series with “Girlfriends” executive producer Kelsey Grammer.
WILSON PICKETT DEAD AT AGE 64
Wilson Pickett, the soul pioneer best known for the fiery hits “Mustang Sally” and “In The Midnight Hour,” died of a heart attack Thursday in a Reston, Va., hospital, according to his management company. He was 64. Chris Tuthill of the management company Talent Source said Pickett had been suffering from health problems for the past year. Pickett lived in Ashburn, Va.
