NEWS: ‘SOUL TRAIN’ CREATOR DON CORNELIUS HAS DIED IN AN APPARENT SUICIDE AT 75

Don Cornelius, the creator of Soul Train, was found dead at his home early Wednesday morning. According to reports, law enforcement officials arrived at his home in Sherman Oaks, California, around 4 a.m. and found him with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Born in Chicago, Cornelius developed Soul Train after recognizing the need for a television program dedicated to soul music. Premiering in October 1971, the show helped offer great exposure for black artists and Cornelius served as its host until 1993. It continued to run until 2006 and is the longest continuously running syndication program in television history.

It is undeniable that Don’s vision and desire to feature minorities in a positive light has influenced urban/pop culture today. From the famous Soul Train line to it’s weekly special musical guests, every black household couldn’t wait to watch their Saturday dose of the Soul Train.

FASHION: STYLE AT THE 2012 SCREEN ACTOR’S GUILD AWARDS

We’re right in the midst of awards season, and next up on the road to the Oscars was the 2012 Screen Actor’s Guild Awards. The Help scored big, taking home wins for Outstanding Performance by a Cast, Best Supporting Actress Octavia Spencer, and Best Actress Viola Davis.

Octavia continued to be an unofficial brand ambassador for Tadashi Shoji, following up her lavender Golden Globes gown with another creation from the Los Angeles-based fashion house. This time she opted for a grey dress that featured a beaded top, and draped skirt.

Viola literally glowed in a white and gold custom gown from Marchesa. The strapless silk chiffon dress featured gold embroidery across the waist and bust. To complete her look, her hair was styled in large, loose curls.

The 16-track mixtape is hosted by DJ Lyte and DJ Lucky Calhoun and features new and remixed material from Slim while he gears up to release his new project. The mixtape also contains a snippet of his brand new first single, which hasn’t been released in full yet.
