BUTTERFLY MCQUEEN (1911-1995) was a successful Broadway dancer and stage & screen actress.
Thelma McQueen was born in Tampa, Florida, on January 8, 1911. She got the name Butterfly after appearing in a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in which she danced in the butterfly ballet.
She entered films in 1939 with roles in Gone with the Wind in which she played Prissy, Scarlett O’Hara’s maid. Around this time, McQueen also modeled for the Mrs. Butterworth bottle. Over the next few years she played small roles often as a maid, a role she also played in Jack Benny’s radio show.

Oscar J. Grant III, 22, was shot in the back and killed by 27-year-old Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) police officer Johannes Mehserle early on New Year’s Day.
John L. Burris, long-time civil rights attorney who is representing Grant’s family, called the death “the worst I’ve ever seen in a shooting case” and said that it “cries out for criminal prosecution.” The family filed a $25-million wrongful death claim against the agency Tuesday.
Graphic video of Grant’s death shows Mehserle shooting the unarmed Grant in the back as he lay face down while other officers restrained him.
Just a day later, a police officer in Bellaire, Texas, shot Robert Tolan, the 23-year-old son of World Series Champion Bobby Tolan outside of their home.
Two young, black, unarmed men shot by those who are supposed to serve and protect. What are we going to do about this?

Meet Melanie Fiona, the latest protege of Steve Rifkind, the industry veteran who brought you the Wu-Tang Clan and Akon. She most recently gained a good fan base by opening up the European leg of Kanye West’s famed Glow In the Dark tour.
Her first single “Give It To Me Right” samples The Zombies’ “Time of the Season,” and Melanie counts Sam Cooke, Nat King Cole, and Gladys Knight as inspirations for her debut album, The Bridge, which will drop sometime this spring (projected month of May) via SRC Records/Universal Motown.

♫ 50 Cent - Get It In (full) - listen
Check out 50 Cent’s second single from his new album, Before I Self Destruct, which has had a couple of problems as far as release. The new song is produced by Dr. Dre, who 50 has garnered plenty of success with. I was a little confused, because “Get It In” is so close to the title of the first single, “Get Up,” which we posted back in October. The new single isn’t anything really to write home about, but I guess it’ll serve it’s purpose.
♫ Teairra Mari - Holla (full) - listen
I’m super excited about Teairra Mari’s new project, actually. This is exactly the direction that I think she should be taking with her music. Even though it’s quite different from the more urban songs that she recorded for her 2005 debut, I think that this music suits Mari vocally. I can’t wait until her new video for “Hunt 4 U” drops and when there’s some more official information about the album.
