Erykah Badu is the second artist featured in the Serato Icon Artist Series, a diverse, hand-picked collection of artists who represent and epitomise the Serato ethos.
In an interview with the popular DJ resource, Badu talked about the hip-hop artists who influenced her musically and dished on the art of being a good DJ, a role she recently took up with the nickname DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown:
Right now we’re in 2012 A.D. where the DJ is now the star because of things like Serato and the need of the tribe (that’s the people) to feel good and feel the music. The DJ is the weatherman. The DJ dictates what the weather is. What we play is how the people feel. I do it fearlessly because I never underestimate the audience’s ability to feel. DJ’ing is a skill and art form. But as a selector, you’ve just narrated the emotions of the crowd. I am becoming a good DJ. I’m a great selector.

Erykah Badu spoke during a press conference on Wednesday (February 29th) in Kuala Lumpur. Her scheduled concert was cancelled due to public outcry of the publication of a semi-nude picture of her with the word ‘Allah’ on her upper body. The photo in question ORIGINALLY APPEARED on Badu’s official website and even though the tattoo was temporary – it was offensive to many of Malaysia’s Muslim-heavy population.
The 41 year-old said she would still come to the country in the future and even took the time to explain what inspired the photograph. Saying she got it from the 1970s surrealist film, The Holy Mountain by Alejandro Jodorowsky.
In addition, Erykah said she understood during the conference saying, “I feel I understand. I don’t have any heavy feelings about it because I understand (the minister’s) position, and I respect the beliefs of the people who also feel the way he does.”View video of the press conference below.
