For the last 25 years Oprah Winfrey has been known for discussing controversial topics, interviewing debatable figures and reuniting families. This time around, the media mogul was the one reuniting with a long-lost family member. In an effort to minimize tabloid fabrications, the 56 year-old decided to share the personal story and newfound discovery of her half-sister, Patricia.
After losing her half-siblings (Pat in 2003 and Jeffrey in 1989), Ms. Winfrey recently learned through other family members that her mother, Vernita Lee gave Patricia up for adoption immediately after giving birth to her back in 1963. When asked by Oprah and Patricia their mother admitted that she had done so in an effort to get off welfare and provide a better life for her daughter.
Now 47 years later, after DNA testing and sharing their first Thanksgiving together, Oprah Winfrey allowed her sister, Patricia, her two children (Aquarius and Andre) and the rest of their family to share their story and how it felt to finally be reunited with a part of a family that they had never known existed.
