CL EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW w/ SOLEDAD O’BRIEN

The daughter of a Afro Cuban mother and an Australian father and the fifth of six children that all graduated from Harvard University -  CNN’s Soledad O’Brien talks about her journey from Long Island to the CNN anchor desk in The Next Big Story: My Journey Through the Land of Possibilities available now in book stores and online. Soledad’s latest novel is filled with personal encounters from her many reporting assignments from her early days in broadcasting to covering world disasters while shedding light on being Black and Latino in America – Soledad O’Brien spoke to Concrete Loop’s Felicia Mancini on her big story.

FELICIA: I like to ask most of the people I have the pleasure of  interviewing this question especially journalists I have spoke to, as a child what did you want to be when you grew up?

SOLEDAD: I had a series of things I was obsessed with when I was a child. I wanted to walk race horses because I wanted to be a Jockey, a doctor, absolutely and positively I wanted to be a doctor. I also wanted to be a musician! We had a family newspaper and I would interview my dad about a vegetable garden you know? I don’t think I necessarily knew I wanted to become a journalist but there were clues.

FELICIA: Who, what or where inspires you?

SOLEDAD: I think that interesting people and interesting stories do! I’m curious to get to the root of what’s going on. I want to interview the main characters and that inspires me. So does my family that always pushes me  to do things well- I am really lucky to have friends that raise up important questions with random conversations we have too.

FELICIA: What did you take from your upbringing as a multicultural young woman in America that influences your work now?

SOLEDAD: I think when I was growing up I never really one hundred percent could identify with anybody. I think in a sense being an outsider and still being able to make it work with is what a lot of journalists have to do and jump into a situation for a story. I needed to identify but still had an outside look that came from my childhood having an outsider perspective that you could have a critically eye on something while still understanding the issues and where they are coming from.

CL EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW w/ MIGUEL! HE TALKS MUSIC, LOVE & STYLE + PHOTOS!

Just after wrapping up a domestic tour with Usher and Trey Songz, singer/songwriter Miguel stopped by the Concreteloop office and took a moment to chat it up with us. The Grammy-nominated songwriter and Jive recording artist shared a bit about who inspires him musically, what it was like working with other recording artists as well as his unique ‘eclectric’ sound and style. The Los Angeles-native released his first studio album, All I Want Is You and has finally been able to step out from behind the scenes and share his talent with the world as an artist. Check out what Miguel had to say about his musical style, what he loves most in a woman as well what he sees in his future:

♫ Miguel – Sure Thing

Concreteloop:
So what artists inspired you while you were growing up?

Miguel:
Artists that inspired me were Prince, Freddie Mercury, Queen, Donny Hathaway, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Phil Collins, Hall & Oates, Smokey Robinson…

Concreteloop:
A very eclectic mix.

Miguel:
Yeah, there’s a few more. Definitely a broad range.

Concreteloop:
For people who aren’t familiar with you, how would you describe yourself as an artist and your music?

Miguel:
I always use this word as a description for myself and it’s ‘eclectric’. The reason why I say eclectric is because I really want to give and pay homage to timeless artists in music that I have a really strong affinity for. At the same time, I feel that I bring a unique perspective and style and delivery that it adds kind of a breath of fresh air. So, you know, there’s definitely qualities that are noticeable and that are familiar but I think the way that I bring them all together and make them a part of who I am is completely unique to what I represent. So eclectric is definitely the word.

Concreteloop:
And I think that’s the perfect word. Just based off the performances we’ve seen. They’re kind of different, but it’s also kind of like, ‘What’s going on?’ It’s like you’re switching it up. You’re making them pay attention.

Miguel:
Yeah thank you.

Happy New year to you, too.

Concreteloop:
Can I just say that I cannot get your song ‘Day Dreamin’ out of my head? I’ve been humming and singing ‘All day long I think of you…’ for the past to days! It’s gotten pretty bad…but yeah, I love that song!

Tatyana:
[laughs] Oh my goodness, thank you. I love that song, too. I really do. Thank you.

Concreteloop:
Yeah, of course, but anyway before we even talk about your music career and of course, your new show Love That Girl!…Let’s take a step back to your Fresh Prince days, shall we, ‘Miss Ashley Banks’?

Tatyana:
Yes, let’s do it!

Concreteloop:
Alright. First of all, what was it like working on that show (Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) at such a young age?

Tatyana:
Umm, it was amazing. It changed my whole life. It changed my family’s life. It moved us from New York to California and I went from, you know, being a normal kid. I’d been acting since I was four, so I always had this strange schedule, you know? Sometimes people knew me from commercials or whatever, or from Sesame Street. I remember me and my Mom being in NYC during one of the summers after the show had come out and there was this school bus of kids that had just kind of pulled up and we were just walking down the street and they started kind of yelling and screaming.
