EVENTS: 2011 BLACK GIRLS ROCK! AWARDS

On Saturday, October 15th, many notable black celebrity women came out to support the 2011 Black Girls Rock Awards! The star-studded event was held at the famed Paradise Theater in Bronx, New York. Co-hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King, artists like Mary J. Blige, Mary Mary, Melanie Fiona, Estelle and Elle Varner stepped on stage to perform their latest singles and fan favorites.

Shirley Caesar, Taraji P. Henson, Angela Davis, Malika Saada Saar & Tatyana Ali and others were 2011 honorees. Check out the gallery below and see who else popped up to show support for the annual ceremony.

Black Girls Rock!, Inc. is a nonprofit organization started by model/DJ/philantrophist Beverly Bonds (top left), that is dedicated to building the self-esteem and self-worth of young women of color by changing their outlook on life, broadening their horizons, exposing them to creative and performing arts, and helping them to empower themselves.

The Black Girls Rock! awards show will air on Sunday, November 6 at 8/7pm CST on BET.

Ciara was seen dressed in a nautica-inspired outfit as she arrived at a restaurant out in Beverly Hills. It is said that the 25 year-old singer will soon join L.A. Reid and other acts like Usher and Outkast in the artists roster for Epic Records. Makin’ moves!

Singer Cassie was decked out in all black with her turquoise Hermes Birkin bag in hand as she strolled down 6th Avenue in Manhattan. In an interview with Paper Mag, the 23 year-old singer shared that her first upcoming single will be “King of Hearts,” a track with “a nice airy type of club vibe”…

FASHION: TUXEDOS FOR THE LADIES

Menswear for women isn’t anything new on the fashion scene, but lately there’s been a fresh twist on the trend. No longer relegated to the basic slack, or classic button down shirt, the tuxedo is becoming a fast fave among the women of Hollywood when they’re looking to add a splash of masculinity to their wardrobes.

Most recently, Lala Anthony stepped out in a tuxedo inspired look to attend a welcoming party for newlyweds Kim Kardashian and Khris Humphries.

Back in June, actress Tika Sumpter wore a cream, short pants tuxedo look to the 5th Annual Pre-BET Awards Celebration Dinner. She capped off her outfit with black platforms and a sparkly black clutch.

And I know none of us have forgotten Beyoncé’s performance at the 2011 MTV Video Awards. She kept things jazzy as only she can, wearing a purple sequin Dolce & Gabbana tux jacket. Continue
