MAG COVERS: MICHELLE OBAMA & JILL BIDEN COVER PARADE MAGAZINE

In their first joint magazine cover, First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden grace the April 24 issue of PARADE magazine to discuss their first joint project, Joining Forces, which supports and honors the families of the nation’s service members.

The First Lady mentioned:

When I started campaigning for my husband, I wanted to meet with groups of women to make sure their stories were a part of the conversation in his campaign and potentially in his administration. Everywhere I went there were military spouses, and their stories took my breath away – the pain of multiple deployments, trying to keep the family afloat. I remember sitting and crying with a group of them. Studies show that many military families feel like the country doesn’t recognize or appreciate (them). And it breaks my heart, because they’re serving as passionately and deeply and proudly as the men and women in uniform.

Dr. Biden added: “We just need to say to America, ‘Wake up. You need to support these families and we need to lift them up and really value them.’

MAG COVERS: RIHANNA COVERS FABULOUS

Rihanna covers the latest issue of U.K. magazine Fabulous. The 23-year-old just wrapped shooting her first film, Battleship, and embarks on her fourth concert tour in June. In the cover story, she speaks about her childhood, motivation, marriage and more. A few snippets are included below.

On her red hair:
“I think I was ready for something new and loud and expressive. It’s really adventurous — I wanted something that was fun, you know. I didn’t want a normal hair color. I’d had blonde, and it was so boring. Black is still my favorite, but I was looking for a color that was edgy. I guess it was just the place I was in at that time. I felt like being spontaneous, and I also wanted to go for something extreme. I couldn’t do green or purple or pink, so red was like the fine line between normal and extreme!”

On her childhood with an alleged crack-addict father who beat her mother:
“I have a lot of great memories, actually. Somehow, the negativity holds a very small space in my mind and memory. I usually just think about the great things, like the beach [in Barbados where she grew up], learning how to swim and write, and catching fish. And most of those things I did with my father. So I seem to just focus on that.”

On the influence her mother has had on her:
“My mother’s definitely had the most influence on me as a woman throughout my life. She raised me in a way that I could be responsible and fearless — she taught me a lot of things about life. She’s made me realize that it comes with consequences.” Continue

MAG COVERS: JENNIFER HUDSON COVERS ESSENCE

Singer/actress Jennifer Hudson covers the April issue of ESSENCE, opening up about her happy family and healthy lifestyle as she prepares to wed professional wrestler David Otunga following her dramatic weight loss.

The Oscar and GRAMMY winner’s next projects include her sophomore album, I Remember Me, which will be released March 22, and new film, Winnie, set to hit theaters later this year.

In order to prepare for her portrayal of Nelson Mandela’s ex-wife, Jennifer spent five days locked up in an African jail after learning Winnie served more than 500 days in solitary confinement:

“(I attempted to) experience some of the hell that woman went through… They snatched her out of her home and she had no idea what happened to her children. Imagine living that? This was her life! This was real. As a woman, I am angry for her, hurting for her. And as a mom? God, being in solitary confinement, away from my son just for five days when shooting those scenes – it was too much for me. I was drained and stripped down. I was changed.”
