WHITE HOUSE: THE OBAMAS OBSERVE MLK DAY OF SERVICE + VIDEO

President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and daughter Malia Obama joined volunteers in a service project as part of a Big Brothers Big Sisters and Greater DC Cares collaborative effort at the Browne Education Center on Monday (January 16). The president commented “there’s nobody who can’t serve, nobody who can’t help somebody else”:

At a time when the country has been going through some difficult economic times, for us to be able to come together as a community, people from all different walks of life, and make sure that we’re giving back, that’s ultimately what makes us the strongest, most extraordinary country on Earth, is because we pull together when times are good, but also when times are hard.

The President and First Lady also attended the Let Freedom Ring concert, which was streamed live online. That means the First Lady, who celebrates her 48th birthday today, missed the premiere of her scripted television debut on the hit Nickelodeon series iCarly. Check out a preview of the First Lady in action.

POLITICS: PRESIDENT OBAMA WRITES ESSAY ON BEING THE FATHER FIGURE HE NEVER HAD

With Father’s Day just around the corner, President Barack Obama has written and contributed a personal essay to People Magazine’s upcoming weekly issue. In the composition, the father of 2 girls shared a bit about his life without a father and how he has managed to not repeat history and be the father he never had to his two daughters, Malia & Sasha. Peep a snippet of the essay below:

I grew up without a father around. I have certain memories of him taking me to my first jazz concert and giving me my first basketball as a Christmas present. But he left when I was two years old.

And even though my sister and I were lucky enough to be raised by a wonderful mother and caring grandparents, I always felt his absence and wondered what it would have been like if he had been a greater presence in my life. I still do. It is perhaps for this reason that fatherhood is so important to me, and why I’ve tried so hard to be there for my own children. Continue
