POLITICAL ROUNDUP: MAXINE WATERS TELLS TEA PARTY TO GO TO HELL / ELIJAH CUMMINGS: OBAMA ‘NEEDS TO FIGHT HARDER’

Rep. Maxine Waters out of California spoke out against the Tea Party this past weekend at a “Kitchen Table Summit” in Inglewood. Upset about the rising rate of black unemployment in America, Waters told the crowd:

“I’m not afraid of anybody. This is a tough game. You can’t be intimidated. You can’t be frightened. And as far as I’m concerned, the Tea Party can go straight to hell.” (view video above)

The Tea Party responded publicly on Monday (LINK) about the recent remark and also blasted President Obama for not saying anything.

As we told you last week, Black unemployment is nearly at 16 percent and many black leaders are wondering why President Obama hasn’t brought light to the issue during his recent tours though the Midwest (LINK).

Sharing in Water’s sentiment is Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.). He appeared on ‘State of the Union’ Sunday to express his disappointment in President Obama and his passive stance, saying,

“Almost every African-American person I have talked to has said they want him to fight, and fight harder,” Cummings said. “If the Republicans are not going to work with us, we just have to go it alone. Stand up to them. Don’t back down, Period. They’re not going to give you anything anyway.” [ READ MORE ]

POLITICS: PRESIDENT OBAMA’S APPROVAL RATING ON THE ECONOMY HITS NEW LOW + BLACK CAUCUS ‘TIRED’ OF HOLDING BACK

As President, Barack Obama often has a hard time catching a break (or gets criticized for even trying to take one), but a new Gallup poll shows the President is also having a hard time getting the country to support his economic tactics.

Only twenty-six percent of Americans approve of the way President Obama is handling the economy, according to the latest figures, which was cause for alarm at Tuesday’s town-hall meeting of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) in Detroit as Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) said they don’t put pressure on the president because black voters love him:

“You’re very proud to have a black man — first time in the history of the United States of America. If we go after the president too hard, you’re going after us.”

Waters also mentioned that President Obama isn’t paying enough attention to the black community. With an unemployment rate just above 16 percent for blacks and the president wrapping up his jobs-promotion trip throughout the Midwest, she added, “We don’t know why on this trip that he’s in the United States now, he’s not in any black community.” Footage from the CBC’s townhall is included below.
