PICS/VIDEO: BET HONORS 2012 + PERFORMANCE LINKS

The fifth annual BET Honors was tapped last month at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C. and finally aired on Monday evening (February 13). This year’s award show honored Dr. Maya Angelou, singers Mariah Carey and Stevie Wonder, film director Spike Lee, educator Beverly Kearney and the Tuskegee Airmen.

Actress Gabrielle Union was the host for the evening with musical performances done by Aretha Franklin, Kelly Rowland, Jennifer Hudson, India. Arie, Ledisi, Common, Anthony Hamilton, Patti LaBelle and more. There was also a spoken word performance given by Willow Smith, Cicely Tyson, Queen Latifah and Jill Scott.

‘ROUND THE WAY: PATTI LaBELLE SUED FOR ALLEGEDLY YELLING AT A TODDLER & THROWING A PUNCH AT THE MOTHER

R&B diva Patti Labelle is getting sued yet again. This time the 67-year-old singer allegedly hurled half-a-bottle of water at a woman and her 18-month-old child in the lobby of New York City apartment building. According to the woman’s lawyer:

The Monks’ lawyer, Sam Davis, said Genevieve, then 18 months old, was scampering around the lobby of a Riverside Blvd. apartment building on the upper West Side in November when LaBelle, in full star regalia with oversize shades and a fur coat, started yelling.

“‘What are you doing letting your kid run around like that?’” Davis quoted LaBelle as asking Roseanna Monk.

He said LaBelle, a mother of five whose real name is Patricia Louise Holte, then started “screaming at my client, throwing water from a bottle at the mother’s face and the baby’s face.” Continue

EVENT PICS: GABRIELLE’S ANGEL FOUNDATION FOR CANCER RESEARCH HOSTS ‘ANGEL BALL 2011′ IN NYC + VIDEO

Charity founder Denise Rich, singers Javier Colon, Patti Labelle, model & honoree Naomi Campbell, Kim Kardashian, Eve, Solange Knowles and singer Estelle were among the many celebrities who attended the Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research Hosts Angel Ball 2011 at Cipriani, Wall Street in New York City on Monday night (October 17).

The Foundation was created in 1996 by Denise Rich and her daughters in memory of her daughter Gabrielle Rich Aouad who passed away at the age of 27 after a long and valiant struggle with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). The mission of Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation is to fund basic and clinical medical research in both conventional and integrative disciplines which focus on prevention, treatment and quality of life issues of leukemia, lymphoma and related cancers. ‘ROUND THE WAY: IDRIS GOES OFF / TIA MOWRY GIVES BIRTH / AMERIIE GETS MARRIED + MORE!

Following his performance with soul singer Jill Scott at the BET Awards, Idris Elba stopped to answer questions from the press/media. One question posed by Cheri Saunders of Black Press Radio struck a nerve in his body. When asked to justify his recent comments about the Tyler Perry and Spike Lee feud, he responded:

“Can I be candid? I don’t like all of Tyler Perry’s films. Yes, I did work with Tyler for ‘Daddy’s Little Girls’ because it portrayed a positive image of a black father. I am happy for Tyler’s success…we need Tyler Perry…by going to support his movies, we need to show economic strength. But we are also responsible for elevating film. I’m not with buffoonish characters like Madea or Big Momma.”
