There was some definite black star power at The 84th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday (February 26) in Hollywood, California. Held at the Hollywood & Highland Center, the event showcased some historic moments in black history.
Actress Octavia Spencer took home the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ Oscar for her portrayal of Minny in ‘The Help’. Mogul Oprah Winfrey and legendary actor James Earl Jones both received the ‘Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award’ for their humanitarian work. Director T.J. Martin (pictured above next to Diddy) became the first African-American director to win an Oscar for his documentary, ‘Undefeated’. Diddy, who is an executive on the film is not listed as a winner on the official winner’s list, so we’re not sure if he will receive an award.
If you’re wondering why producer Pharrell Williams made an appearance, he played in the official band (along with Sheila E) during the ceremony – helping to co-write exclusive scores with composer Hans Zimmer. Last but not least, Grammy award winning singer/musician Esperanza Spalding performed a beautiful rendition of Louis Armstrong’s classic song, “What a Wonderful World” during the ‘In Memoriam’ part of the show.
